The problem of mass shootings

Mass shootings and Gun violence are two of the primary issues that are in the new frequently (Siegel, 2019). The majority of young people who are primarily affected by both problems (mass shooting and gun violence) are aware of what is happening. Still, the topic is considered to be the sensitive, potentially careful topic and scary. A mass shooting is identified as an event that claims the lives of at least four victims (Siegel, 2019). Every time there is a mass shooting in the United States, both Americans and others around the globe are confronted with the primary concern of what lies behind the American horror Americans are forced continuously to relive daily. Gun violence in the US has decreased over time, but mass shootings are on the rise, identified to be deadlier and more frequent.

Body

The problem of mass shootings

Mass shooting in the United States needs to be treated as a public health problem. Often many people prefer to relate mass killings to mental illnesses (Schildkraut, 2016). But there is little to no evidence that proposed mental illness rates as associated with mass shootings. Research conducted on suing root cause analysis on different known mass shooters not to have any history of mental illness. Some of the shooters have exhibited frustration, anger, suicidal or homicidal, thus not generally ill. Overall, mass shootings in America are terrible tragedies that can be avoided with the use of high-quality research data, enactment of best practices, and wisdom offered by public health and human behavior experts. The identified obstacle to mass shootings is associated with political will and non-scientific influences not related to community safety.

Examples of mass shootings

The recent mass shooting in America in 2020 was on February 26, 2020, where six victims were killed (Luca, Malhotra, and Poliquin, 2020). The shooting happened at Milwaukee brewery shooting, after the gunman fired and killed five persons he later turned on himself and killed himself. On January 17, 2020, a mass shooting was witnessed at Grantsville Utah, where four people were killed and one injured (Luca, Malhotra and Poliquin, 2020). The shooting happened on the Haynie family. The executor alleged to be the family teenager as they returned home. There have been other memorable mass shootings. For example, on October 1, 2017, 58 people were killed, June 12, 2016, 49 people killed, April 16 2007, 32 killed, and December 14, 2012, 27 people killed (Luca, Malhotra, and Poliquin, 2020).

Trait theory on mass shootings

Trait theory is an approach used to study human personality (Albrecht, 2017). All trait theorists are interested in measuring respective individuals’ traits, which are defined as habitual patterns of behavior, emotions, and thoughts. An increase in mass shootings in America has resulted in trait theories being examined to evaluate the shooters’ personality. Personality is differentiated across individuals (Albrecht, 2017). Often persons who are involved in mass shootings are identified to be frustrated, angry, dealing with rejection, depressed, and suicidal. Mental illnesses have been ruled out as the primary cause of the increase in mass shootings across America. Therefore, preference to apply trait theory to have a better understanding of mass shooters is essential to ensure potential shooters are identified from an early onset before they are problematic in the future.

Application of Victimology on mass shootings

Victimology defined as the scientific study of emotional physical and financial harm people suffers because of previous criminal activities (Sahni, Kirchhoff and Palit, 2017). The survey of Victimology seeks to have an understanding of why criminals target specific victims, and once the victims have been afflicted, what translates them to be perpetrators (Sahni, Kirchhoff and Palit, 2017). A mass shooting is mostly governed by the psychology of the victims that are psychologically disturbed. Thus, the preference to study Victimology helps to understand the likelihood the perpetrators will commit additional offenses, which allows them to reframe the kind of individuals they may victimize.

Solutions of mass shootings in America

Solutions of mass shootings in America need to be addressed holistically. First, it is essential to establish safe and equitable schools to help with a reduction in gun violence, especially in high-risk communities (Parks, Bechtold, Shelp, Lieberman, and Coffey, 2019). Second, anyone buying a firearm needs to have a perfect record and have no prior criminal case record whatsoever. For persons with any criminal case, they are not licensed to have any forearm purchased. Third, for any significant concert events being organized, it is paramount to responsibly plan for emergencies so that the staff is aware of all emergency exits. In the case of an event, it is easier to save as many people from the concert as much as possible. Four, for all significant crowd events, it is essential to implement necessary security upgrades to prevent shooters access to the grounds and potentially cause any harms (Parks, Bechtold, Shelp, Lieberman, and Coffey, 2019). Five, for any person who has currently taking mental treatment therapies or has in the past been associated with psychological issues, needs to be monitored closely to ensure they are not predisposed to any form of danger and ultimately, course mass shootings.

Conclusion

A mass shooting is a significant issue currently in America. It is prudent all Americans take the initiative to devise ways to reduce the problems of mass shootings. The primary causes of mass shootings in America are attributed to frustration, anger, suicidal, or violent incidence. Thus, it is prudent to ensure these issues are sorted, and mass shooting is eliminated in American society.
