The Quarantine Season
The Quarantine Season was an article written by Lisa Tobin in mid-April this year. Lisa’s main argument was that at this critical time, when the world is perturbed by the coronavirus crisis, citizens wanted more than just virus news. Lisa argued that the New York Times had introduced a new program, The Daily, which was an audio program that would make citizens more comfortable and joyful at this critical time (Tobin, 2020). She also added that it is the high time citizens needed nourishment, stories, and connection with one another. Lisa was using persuasiveness to make her case. She was trying to convince all citizens that The Daily program was full of laughter, music, and comfort, which all citizens wanted during these stressful moments of coronavirus. Additionally, Lisa commented that the New York Times was committed to bringing essential journalism of the moment, and through this, she was trying to lure viewers and readers into listening to the new program.
The author used both rhetoric and logical argumentation in the article. Lisa used rhetorical appeal by listing some experienced journalists who had covered memorable articles. For instance, Lisa gave an example of Kelvin Roose, who has been reporting about the internet and its role in society for several years. Lisa was persuading the listeners that they find joy and relief when listening to The Daily (Tobin, 2020). In addition, Lisa used logical argumentation when she highlighted that there was a breakdown of how the programs would run weekly. For instance, the Sugar Calling would be aired on Wednesdays, the Rabbit Hole episode on Thursdays, and a Bit of Relief on Fridays. The Sunday Read would complement the weekends. The author’s position was reasonable because the majority of the citizens are at home, and they want something that would break the monotony of the coronavirus news. The Daily program would listeners and viewers comfortable and joyful during this time when people are spending most of their time at home.
