“The Raven” depends on its effects to create distinct foreboding, gloomy, and melancholy atmosphere, as with many of the works of Edgar Allen Poe (Farias 20). This atmosphere is evoked by language use, the film setting, and the feelings of the narrator. The settings of the film are gloomy and dark. The narrator is reading alone, and the time of the day is midnight. The fire of the narrator is fading down to ashes. Because of the death of his beloved, the narrator himself is in despair. The poem’s language contributes to fearful and dejected mood by emphasizing terms such as sorrow, weary, dreary, and nevermore (Farias 25). In the Raven, the major themes are confronting death and grief and the human thirst for self-tortures. The expression “the human self-torture thirst originates from the composition philosophy where Edgar Allan Poe explains the way he composed “The Raven.” The work explores how much of the pain of the narrator is imposed by his questioning. After the death of Lenore, the narrator searches the universe for meaning and symbols, his love to confront death and grief. Poe started composing “The Raven” to generate a singular emotion. The speaker then chose the death of a cute lady, the most heart-rending variety, melancholy as the most strong emotion, and death the most melancholic experience. The musical piece architecture is merged from there. The work is fantastic, strange, and beautiful imagery. A narrator is a person grieving the loss of his love. His desperations and sadness compelled him into torturing himself with queries he knows shall cause him pains (Farias 30)
. I will examine the original atmosphere, mood, and themes of the classic video game Doom and its latest installment, Doom 3, compared to the Simpsons-Edgar Allan Poe: The Raven.
