 MACRO ENVIROMENT

  • PESTLE ANALYSIS:
  1. POLICTICAL/ ECONOMIC– The south African President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently came to the nation commenting on the economic status of South Africa and that it has gone I to an economic recession. Due to many occurrences of load shedding in the past few months losing major working hours by the day and therefore losing productivity. Eskom has had a lack maintenance on their fuel stations therefore leading the load shedding. And the major impact of corona virus. The corona virus Has become major factor towards the economy of south Africa. Resulting in a National lock down of south Africa. All civilians have to go into quarantine for 21 days. Meaning they will be no major income from any Shop nationwide even internationally in major countries of the world. The corona virus has brought a major drop to the Fuel industry cutting prices by over 56% for crude oil. Bringing a major drop across all business boards. Bringing a drop of fuel prices in the near April but also bring a major inflation in the near future. Only allowing a collective number of businesses to stay open and operating. Medical personal and as well supermarkets and obviously the military for they were instructed to assist the police in order to maintain the lock down.
  • Shell S.A van this an opportunity to provide services to the Military of South Africa to provide them fuel as well as the medical teams and the Supermarket personal.
  • Civilians are allowed to exit their homes to retrieve medical help and basic needs.

By constantly checking up on the political and economic state of South Africa, shell can predict and prepare and equip themselves if there are any major changes to the country’s economic and political system. Therefore, they will always will be at and advantage against competitors

Tailoring their use of fresh water to local conditions, as water constraints tend to affect people at the local or regional level. In some cases, using alternatives to fresh water in their operations; these in clean recycled water, processed sewage water and desalinated water

LEGESLATION

The government institutions and frameworks in a country, while technically also political and thus subject to whichever political party holds the majority in a government body, are also legal and thus should be considered in a PESTLE analysis. Often Shell policies on their own are not enough to efficiently protect Shell and its workers, making Shell appear an undesirable place of employment that may repel skilled, talented workers.

  • Discrimination laws are placed by the government to protect the employees and ensure that everyone in Shell is treated fairly and given the same opportunities, regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.
  • Laws are also placed to ensure a certain level of quality or reasonable price for certain products to keep the customer safe and prevent them for being provided. The industries this applies to find often their costs elevated.
  • Shell is among the top companies that are targeted by the regulations. There are also health and employment safety regulations that are enforced on oil and gas companies. The regulations are likely to limit potential for the companies.
  • Regulations have been set into place for carbon emissions and environmental safety and they have increased for all companies dealing with oil and gas, including shell. With the growing concerns on the drastic climatic changes and global warming, there is increased pressure on governments and international regulatory bodies to come up with new regulations that will help to minimize harm on the environment (Keetie, 2010).

With shell looking for new innovative ways to be more environmentally friendly they will have an advantage against others stations for they are abiding to the regulations for carbon emissions and trying to diminish their impact.

INTENSIVE STAREGIES

  • The broad aim of Shell when considering these strategies is to maximize the profitability and broaden market share to maintain relevancy and ensure long-term business growth. The effective implementation of these strategies requires the firm to exert the intensive efforts, particularly when management considers them as a source of competitive advantage.

Market penetration

  • By lowering their prices, they are using a market strategy to sales to existing customers and new ones to gather a larger market. Giving pricing discounts and sales, running promotional campaigns and offers the product in new attractive packaging to achieve sale growth while stating in the same market
  • The adoption of market penetration as a primary intensive growth strategy is linked with Shell’s ability to differentiate its offerings besides attaining the cost leadership. The combination of cost and differentiation of generic strategies supports this intensive growth strategy. During the initial growth time period, market penetration strategy played an important role in making the Shell successful in its home market. Later, recognition at the national level was used to target new markets all over the world. The brand awareness gained through high market penetration was also used as a tool to offer new products to existing and new consumer markets.
  • This is an aggressive strategy using tactics which are required when using the strategy in the competitive market.

Market development

  • Shell uses it as a secondary strategy to achieve growth objectives. This strategy involves the development of new products or modification in the current product lines to make them new to current customer base. Growth-seeking firms like Shell adopt this strategy when they found limited growth opportunities in the current market with the current product line.Targeting existing customers with new products requires comparatively less time, resources and efforts as the company leverage the already developed brand awareness and customer loyalty.
  • Shell has considerably extended its product line, and its product array has become too broad. It allows the company to hedge the risks as it can compensate the losses incurred from one product line with the gains received from others. Currently, the organization has more than Competitor product brands been served all over the world. Product development is an important tool to attract more customers.

In terms of new product development, three main approaches are available to Shell.

  • First is to offer new products that share a close association with current product lines.
  • Second, to offer new products that resonate the purchase behavior of current customers.
  • The third strategy is to develop new products that refresh or reinvent current products. Shell manages to successfully introduce new products through on-going assessment of customers’ needs.

Market development

  • The main objective of this strategy is to explore and enter new markets.
  • Shell uses market development as a growth strategy that supports market penetration and product development. The organization has extensively applied this strategy, and as a result, it is currently present in more than Competitor countries. The successful entry in new consumer markets has played a key role in making Shell a global brand. Main reasons behind the worldwide presence are- affordable prices, strong brand name and flavor. Besides these factors, the successful marketing and celebrity endorsed promotional campaigns have also helped Shell in capturing new customers and becoming the market leader in many countries.
  •  Multinational firms like Shell have four ways available to apply this intensive growth strategy- developing new distribution channels, creating new market segments by charging varying prices, developing new product dimensions or considering new geographic areas. The geographic expansion requires substantial resource commitment, and it is also necessary for an organization to evaluate whether current distribution network and other resources support the decision to enter in that particular geographic region. Entry in culturally distant markets is riskier as it requires an organization to be culturally intelligent and built effective knowledge management mechanisms.

Diversification

  • This strategy involves entering new markets with new products. The diversification strategy is further divided into related diversification and unrelated diversification.
  • The strategic objective linked with diversification intensive growth strategy is to expand the portfolio through effective acquisition strategies. Due to risk factors, the company focuses on the related diversification and avoids risky experiences into unknown regions. Rather, the company utilizes the brand awareness and strength to launch related products in the global drink industry. However, some examples of Shell’s unrelated diversification are offering merchandise from fridges, shirts, glasses to pens.
  • The related diversification strategy is applied by acquiring profitable businesses after analyzing market trends and changing customer expectations. For example, in response to the growing criticism by environment protection groups, the company attempted to offset the loss from declining sales by investing in green businesspractices and making business partners with the positive brand image.
