Cunningham, Craig, & Lv (2019) examines the conditions that led to the development of live-streaming platforms in China. The article notes that digitization in china is one of the reasons that provided a conducive environment for it to thrive. Nevertheless, the increased tensions between Chinese culture, politics, and economic ambitions have limited its growth in the recent past. Cunningham, Craig, & Lv argue that the commercialization of live streaming was particularly crucial since it allowed streamers to dictate their e-commerce terms in platforms. The creation of China, a controlled digital ecosystem different from the western world, has also limited live stream platforms’ potential. Besides, state control and suppression of specific content has driven content creators from the platforms. My Personal Experience
As a Streamer, I have experienced first-hand the rise of live streaming that has garnered over one hundred thousand subscribers on my channel. While the rise in digital technology significantly contributed to the rise of lives streaming, increased regulation from the government, piracy, and counterfeiting of the content led to its decline. I believe that as a former live streamer, my experience would represent that of the many other streamers like myself.
