The Science Informing the Policy and Politics of Disaste
After having read the text and any additional research you choose, assess the role science plays or should play regarding informing (developing) policy and politics of disasters or terrorism-related matters. Be sure to include how science applies/relates during each phase of an emergency (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery). What one scientific concept, principle, or tool do you like most or find most useful as it pertains to disaster or terrorism management?
In the present day, risks related to terrorism and disaster are at an all-time high. The level of uncertainty and loss when it occurs has been challenging to assess and consequently mitigate. It is the basis on which science needs to come in and fill the gaps. Science allows for efficient evaluation, recording, simulation, and ultimate preparedness to deal with disaster and terrorism associated risks. The role of science begins with effective policymaking. It transcends to include system structuring to ensure that risk mitigation policies and procedures evolve with the same pace of the environment around them.
During the wake of natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, it is Scientists that came together to create a system that allowed for simulation of such natural disasters. Through this approach, institutions were able to evaluate their risk management strategies and come up with a more efficient plan of preparing for and mitigating the arising risks (Sothgate J, Roth C, 2015).
Science allows for proper mitigation by developing a system that uses principles and theories that can ascertain the direct business processes associated with specific risks. The information gathered during the evaluation process, then becomes useful to managers in making decisions on strategic risk management plans. This scientific system also leads to quality preparedness by providing a structured risk management plan that permeates an organization through technological tools like microphone and computer systems that communicate acceptable standard protocol.
The system also gives room for better collaboration between public and private institutions. Private firms can work in partnership with public institutions like fire emergency departments and police departments for quick response times. The speedy response action reduces fatal losses and could be the most significant help for recovery.
Science is essential in coming up with policies that are adaptable in the current complex and technological environment. It is through science that companies can customize their risk management plans to be able to enjoy speedy response times and more comfortable recovery. Terrorism today has been escalated to adapt the use of advances in science and technology; it, therefore, makes sense to create risk management systems that are as lethal as the risks.
