The social dimension of globalization

The social dimension of globalization is quite complicated. Moreover, the public debate on the effects of globalization to society is an impasse. Globalization has led to a process of extensive change that is affecting almost everyone. Modern technology, which is supported by open policies, has established a world that is more interconnected more than before. Globalization has not only led to growing interdependence in economic connections –finance, trade, and organization of production internationally- but also affected political and social interactions among individuals and organization across the globe. Essentially, the increase interrelations between people across the world are bringing the impression that people are living in a global community. If properly managed, globalization can deliver extraordinary progress, produce jobs that are more productive for all people, and reduce world poverty. However, the current trend of globalization is leading to unbalanced outcomes between countries. Even though wealth is being created, many people and countries do not share in the benefits. Many economies across the world have little or no voice in influencing the process. Seen through the lens of many women and men, globalization has not helped them attain their legitimate and simple aspiration of decent jobs and a great future for their children. Many people are living in an informal economy with no formal rights as well as in strip of poor nations that exist insecurely on the limits of a global economy.

The global imbalance due to globalization is politically unstable and morally unacceptable. What is needed to change is not the realization of the Utopian plan in one pounce. Rather it is a process involving coordinated changes across a broad obverse, ranging from changes of the global economic system to strengthening the governance at the national level. To deal with issues of globalization, several recommendations must be put in place.  One of the recommendation to address the issues linked to globalization is adopting effective macroeconomic policies. To reap the benefits of globalization, governments in industrialized and developing economies should provide better education, flexible labour markets, and career training to help people embrace the pressures of globalization. The government should also ensure that it has implemented effective rules that deal with corruption and poverty.

Another key recommendation is allowing only the necessary technology. The same technology that has promoted globalization is the same one exploited by civil society, governments, and individuals. Both developed and developing nations should invest in technology that helps them open new opportunities.  For instance, technology should elevate the living standards of living. The technology can be used to reduce health costs especially for the ageing population where they can do self-diagnosis and recommend treatment.

Another recommendation involves the reduction of poverty and the introduction of macroeconomic policies that support full employment. Although globalization opens new opportunities for employment, it has also been known to contribute to the high rate of unemployment in many countries. Countries should adopt responsible and fair trading policies that create secure employment opportunities. Besides, the government should advocate for proper working conditions, gender equality, social dialogue, and social security for employees. By implementing these recommendations, different economies across the world will be able to enjoy the benefits of globalization. For instance, there will be an equitable distribution of resources and opportunities between countries. Additionally, the absolute level of opportunity across the globe will be significantly reduced.
