The Summative Project in this course has two components: 1) an activity engaging with contemporary portrayals of Jesus in one of three ways and 2) an essay in which you evaluate the Gospels’ portrayal of the identity and ministry of Jesus.
For component one, students will select ONE of the following activities.
Track 1 Activity: Evaluate the Portrayal of Jesus in this children’s Bible |
In preparation for the essay, students should: LIST: Read relevant portion of the Little Words Matter Bible Storybook and list LIST the stories about Jesus that the Bible contains and any explicit theological claims made about the identity of Jesus. COMPARE AND CONTRAST: How does this compilation of Jesus stories compare to one of the four canonical gospels? EVALUATE: If an individual only had this children’s Bible, what about Jesus would they know? What would they not know? |
What you’ll submit: your list of the stories and identity claims |
For component two, students will write a 650-750 word essay that includes these components and responds to the prompts for your track:
Track 1 Essay: Evaluate the Portrayal of Jesus in a children’s Bible (Links to an external site.) |
Introductory paragraph, including thesis statement |
Section 1: Summarize what you noticed as you evaluated the portrayal of Jesus in this children’s Bible. As you look at the stories included (and not included) what did you notice? |
Section 2: How can the portrayal of Jesus in this study Bible be expanded to include those important elements of the identity of Jesus that are not included? Where any elements added or embellished? |
Section 3: Formulate your own view: What stories and/or claims about Jesus do you consider essential knowledge in order to understand the identity and teachings of Jesus accurately and comprehensively? |
Be sure to review the assignment rubric before submitting your assignment to see how your instructor will be grading your work.
