- How was Canada’s mission in Afghanistan part of the “War on Terror”? Was it the same kind of mission as the American war in Iraq? Explain.
The ‘War on Terror’
‘War on Terror’ is explicitly used by the United States, United Kingdom, and their allies regarding the continuing military campaign against groups and regimes acknowledged by them as terrorists (Sian, 2017). Similarly, after the terror attack in the U.S. in 2001, Canada cooperated with an international alliance to sabotage the al-Qaeda terrorist setup and the Taliban administration that sheltered it in Afghanistan (Sian, 2017). Approximately 40 000 Canadian troops served in the campaign that lasted for twelve years (Sian, 2017).
The American War in Iraq was spearheaded by Iraq’s suspected establishment of weapons for mass destruction and the alleged connection between Saddam Hussein’s government and terrorist groups, specifically the Al-Qaeda (Sian, 2017). Both Canada and the United States conformed to the definition of the ‘War on Terror’ since both missions aimed at eradicating terror attacks.
