the ways we acquire a sense of belonging in society
One of the ways we acquire a sense of belonging in society is through social responsibility. When making different lists, I was able to notice various things about myself. One thing that noticed was that I am not usually open to receiving help from other people. For example, my brother offered to assist me in doing the dishes, but I refused to say that I was able to manage just fine. The refusal was after I had prepared a meal for the entire family. He continued to insist, and I eventually let him help. It was then that I realized that no matter how exhausted I was, I could never ask for help.
Additionally, I realized that even when I did not expect help from anyone, I again received some form of support. My brother always drives me around when I need to run any errands or when my parents need us to take care of any tasks. I, however, still expect him to be readily available when I need him without objection. I would feel frustrated if I would find my brother unavailable or busy when I needed him and expected him to drop whatever he was doing to come and assist me. This reaction showed me that I take this great form of support for granted.
From this exercise, I learned the importance of gratitude. Kindness goes a long way when it comes to giving help and also receiving it. It is essential to notice the small tasks, no matter how trivial they may seem, and show gratitude. When people show us kindness, we find the need to reciprocate wither kindness. When my brother helped me with the dishes, I wanted to do something good for him to show my appreciation. Kindness brings about a feeling of gratitude.
