The White Blood Cells

This discussion will focus on the white blood cell (WBC). The white blood cell is a classification of blood cells that are manufactured in the bone marrow and distributed to the lymph tissue and into the blood flow (National Cancer Institute, 2020). The WBCs are particular cells found in animals and among their most significant function is to strengthen the immune system. The WBC constitutes of the following features;

While playing the crucial role of fighting infection in the immune system, the various types of WBCs categorically identify harmful bacteria, intruders, and in the process, make antibodies that protect an animal’s body from such harmful-causing microorganisms (Eldridge, 2009). Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Lymphocytes, and Monocytes are all types of WBCs. Eosinophils, Basophils, and Neutrophils have granules, whereas lymphocytes have a large nucleus, with no cytoplasm and have agranulocytes (MicroscopeMaster.com, 2020). Monocytes have a sickle-shaped nucleus and have more cytoplasm and are agranulocytes (MicroscopeMaster.com, 2020). Like all animal cells, the white blood cells are made up of organelles such as the Nucleus, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and cell wall. Furthermore, WBCs are exceptional because they perform highly specific and essential purposes, and also do not undergo through the process of cell division in the bloodstream.

All of these types play a crucial role, but Neutrophils are considered to be the first line of defense, especially when the body id invaded with foreign microorganisms (De Alarcon, 2019). In the process of identifying and protecting the body against pathogens, the white blood cells play an essential role in homeostasis. A healthy and protected body has balance and a steady internal state, helping maintain several physiological factors in the body of an organism, including nutritional value, temperature, and blood pressure (De Alarcon, 2019).
