Thesis Statement:
“As the world becomes more connected, language diversity is plummeting,” Jordan Pearson (Vice) effectively uses ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos to elaborate on the various challenges indigenous and minority languages are facing and the negative effects of globalization. Pearson’s writing furthers the notion that every nation has been subject to colonization due to exponential globalization. Another source, ‘The Colony’ by Andrew Bennett and Nicholas Royle, also furthers Pearson’s argument by expounding on the role of colonialism and expansionism in the decline of minority languages.
- Introduction Draft
Globalization and colonialism are some of the influencing factors to the current structure of the world and world politics. Globalization refers to the ever-growing interdependence of world economies, populations, and cultures that have been created out of the cross-border trade of goods and services, investments, information, and technology (Burlacu, Gutu & Matei, 2018). The flow of investments, information, and technology is mostly from Western countries to the rest of the world because they are more advanced in finance, knowledge, and technology. Colonization, on the other hand, refers to the process of discovery, conquest, and settlement of large populations of foreign people among indigenous people while establishing control over the latter with a view of exploiting them and their resources (Ali, Fjeldstad, & Shifa, 2020). Though the practice of colonization is long gone, critics often argue that it persists as neo-colonialism. In neo-colonialism, colonial control of other territories exists through an invisible hand where local politics and economics are controlled by foreign powers.
