Thoughts of Hanoi

The writer of thoughts of Hanoi talks about how his home town was converted into a capital of united terrorist by the communist rule. From his writing, the primary literary devices he uses to express himself are flashbacks and personification. Thoughts of Hanoi is majorly based on activities that happened in the past hence the use of flashbacks as the author can express himself. Furthermore, he employs the use of personification as he refers to his home town as a person, specifically his brother. Apart from that, Vinh uses foreshadowing to predict what might happen in the future and what will become of them.

As highlighted above, thoughts of Hanoi writer has employed the use of flashbacks to deliver the message. Vinh(“stainless blue sky, jubilant voices of children stumbling through the alphabet, village graybeards strolling to the temple, grandmothers basking in twilight sun, chewing betel leaves while children run” from line 40 to 46).from this Vinh gives an overview how peaceful his home country was in the past. Due to this, we can see those daily activities are carried without any interference, which creates a friendly environment. Children were allowed to play and interact freely, they had good weather that encouraged birds to make it their habitat. Furthermore, spiritual beings were allowed to attend worship centers as they pleased. Grandmothers were also taken care of in the right way. Vinh (“the girls’ bright eyes ruddy cheeks four-piece dresses raven bill scarves sowing harvesting spinning weaving all year round” line 22 to 30). This depicts the happy mood around the girls as they carried out their duties; this happiness made them look beautiful with their bright eyes. In conclusion, Vinh’s work has used flashbacks as it gives a picture of his writing intentions.

Through the analysis of Vihn’s work, out is quite evident that he inserts the use of personification to pass across his message. Vinh (brother, how is all that now? Or is obsolete? Are you like me? Relieving the past, imagining the future? Do you count me as a friend, or am I the enemy in your eyes?” From lines 47 to 56) As Vinh engages in the thought of his home town, he chooses to address it as a person. He goes ahead to pose questions that are going through his mind. He wants to know how his home town is doing at the moment. In addition to that, Vinh wants to see whether it thinks of the past and gets a view of how the future. This revelation also portrays Vinh’s love for his home town and his desire that it would turn out like old times. Vinh (for don’t you remember how it was, you and I in school together, plotting our lives together those roots go deep!” From line 65 to 68). The writer talks about his bond and his home town and explains how it was stable during those past days.
