Trends in Mental Health Counselling
Question 1
The specific trend that will have a major impact in counseling is that of digital counseling. This has started to disrupt the traditional models of counseling, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. People will no longer go to the physical location of their counselor to seek services (Tannous, 2017). Instead, they will use online platforms to be connected to practitioners. This means that it will be a global profession. Additionally, technology is also likely to lead to non-person counselors. Computers will likely be loaded with counseling information reducing the need for people to visit counselors as their questions will already have been answered by the software. One of the steps that I am taking to prepare for this future is familiarization with distance and digital counseling. There is a recognition that digital counseling platforms will bring with them plenty of security and privacy concerns. However, a practitioner who has understood these elements will be in a better position since they will digitize their practice and change with the changing times.
Question 2
The vision for the future common in both the American Mental Health Counseling Association Website and the American Counselling website is to have a profession where all practitioners are aware of diversity and respect it. In the American Counselling website, Black Lives Matter is highly prioritized where it indicates that the ACA denounces racism. The website then proceeds to give information and resources on cultural competency (ACA, 2020). This is in line with their mission statement, where they aim to use the profession and practice of counseling to promote diversity and respect for human dignity. Similarly, the first thing viewed after visiting the AMHCA website is an invitation to a virtual summit on cultural competency skills. This shows the association’s commitment to having all the mental health professionals have cultural competency skills (AMHCA, 2020). The mission statement of the AMHCA seeks to enhance the profession of clinical mental health counseling through advocacy, education, and collaboration. Educating people on cultural competency is a trend for the future as the diversity in the world is bound to increase. This will be influenced by rampant immigration and globalization.
