Introduction

On the 27th of January 2017, Donald Trump announced the executive order that will ban the citizens of seven Muslim countries from traveling into the U.S. The order caused a public uproar in the country, from the international community and civil society. The executive order banned the refugees from Syria from entering the borders of America, compel the evacuees to resettle, and prevent the nationals of dominant Muslim countries from entering the borders of the United States for ninety days. The orders led to conflicts due to the victimization of immigrants and travelers in American soil, especially at the terminal of airports, workplaces, and courts. Immigrants and travelers were denied access to attorneys, and some were subjected to return flights to an unknown destination.

The Purpose of the Directive

In December 2015, Trump promoted false allegations about Muslim celebrations on 9/11. He reacted this way after the occurrence of San Bernardino shootings. He proposed the Muslim ban and criticized Hillary Clinton after her refusal to use the phrase “radical Islamic.” He supported the temporary ban of Muslims travel to the country until a solution is provided by the officials (Ayoub, & Beydoun, 2016). He ordered thorough vetting of individuals coming from the affected states before allowing them into the U.S.

The executive will prevent the citizens of Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Iran, and Iraq from stepping into America for 90 days. The possible reason for banning the travel of these countries is due to the strong Islamic beliefs of their nationals. Unfortunately, the travel ban did not establish exclusion for students and individuals with approval to work in the country (Daugirdas, & Mortenson, 2017). The order affected all citizens of the dominant Muslim countries. The order was issued by the president as one of his manifestos to protect the entry of foreign terrorist into the country

The executive order that aimed to protect American citizens from terrorists prevent most people from accessing America. The order temporarily suspended the citizens of seven Muslim countries that were believed to accommodate and train terrorists for many years. Most of the government of the international community was astonished by Trump’s travel ban on dominant countries. The American Civil Liberties Union partners document the hardship experienced by nationals of banned Muslim countries. At the time, the U.S. government declined to provide information to the general public on why and how the boycott would be implemented.

The order will prevent more than 200 million people from entering America without a genuine reason, which is unfair. Most of the citizens of Muslim countries have businesses and families in America. Therefore, the business will be affected, and they will be forced to relocate their families. The visas of the nationals from the seven countries were canceled and disallowed to enter America unless they have legal papers or green card.

Impact of the Directive

The order affected people across the globe, either positively or negatively. The poll conducted by Ipsos and Reuter shows that 48 percent of American people support the order of the president to ban the travel of nationals of the Muslim countries to America. The ban is likely to affect American citizens positively.  The move will prevent the chances of a foreign terrorist attack that is mostly facilitated by members from the Muslim countries. The directive will also favor the department that is mandated to fight terrorism in America. The department will mostly have fewer Individuals to manage after the travel ban, as they will not focus on individuals who originate from those seven countries. The presidential order will negatively affect students who originate from the seven countries. Their F1/J1/M1 Visas will be revoked and will be forced to leave their studies and to return to their home countries (Stanbrook, 2017). t. Most of the citizens from the seven Muslim countries have businesses in America, while others have relatives who reside in America but cannot travel to connect with their loved ones. On the other hand, refugees from Syria who are genuinely in need of humanitarian help will be affected negatively, since the directive prevents them from entering America to acquire the support.

The executive order impacted the agencies in America that will implement the law. For instance, the Department of Homeland is expected to set aside more resources to vet the visas that belong to individuals from the seven countries. The department will determine individuals with an approved pass and genuine green cards from those countries and allow them back into America.  A large amount of money will be set aside to facilitate the vetting of individuals at the ports and airports across the country. This will enable the directive is implemented, and all border points protected to avoid illegal entry.

The ban was criticized by many around the world. For instance, the evangelical leaders criticized the directive saying that immigrants should be given humanitarian support irrespective of their religion. Dignitaries from different countries opposed the directive issued by the president. Leaders around the world told Trump to reconsider his directives, as it discriminated and negatively affected the minority. The directive also affected the officials of Aid organization from the seven Muslims countries, as they were unable to travel to America for meetings and briefings. Moreover, the staff of Aid organization in the us were prevented from visiting the seven Muslim countries, which affected the service delivery of the organization negatively.

The Current State of the Case

Trump is planning to expand the travel order by adding more countries to the list. He argued that terrorist attack is on the rise globally, and America need to be safer. Even though he did not give details on the countries to be affected by the directive, the U.S. media said that Myanmar, Nigeria, Tanzania and Eritrea had been considered by his administration. The directive of the president prevented travelers from seven Muslim countries. However, the list was revised in June 2018 after the Supreme Court challenged the Presidential order. The list was restricted to Iran, Venezuela, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and North Korea.

Recently, the president extended the travel ban other six countries, which consisted of Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, Tanzania, as well as Myanmar. The new policy, unlike the previous directives order, will allow short-term travels of nationals of the listed countries. The ban will have significant impacts on businesses and families of the listed countries, especially Nigeria. The travel ban led to protests across the country, which compelled travelers to return back to their original countries. A federal court blocked the directive temporarily, but the list was later modified by the Supreme Court. The modified list prevented the travel of immigrants and individuals from Syria, North Korea, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Venezuela, and Iran.

According to the White House Spoke, the administration had no announcement that is associated with the Presidential directive. The administration also said that the approach is effective in protecting the country from terrorist attacks. They wanted all affected countries to comply with counter-terrorism measures set by the U.S., for them to participate in the U.S. immigration programs. Some people, on the other hand, have criticized the ban by saying that most terrorist attacks such as the 9/11 and the Orlando nightclub attack were carried out by individuals who came from countries that have not been affected by the travel ban. Unfortunately, country such as Nigeria have not been listed in the travel ban even though their nationals carried out most terrorist attacks in America. The U.S. has partnered with Nigeria to counter terrorism.

Conclusion

On 27th of January 2017, Donald trump came up with executive order that banned the travel of seven Muslim countries which included Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Iran and Iraq. The directive caused attracted criticism from the international community and civil society. The executive order also banned the refugees from Syria from entering the borders of America, compel the evacuees to resettle and prevent the nationals of dominant Muslim countries from entering the borders of the United States for ninety days. Recently, the president extended the travel ban other six countries which included Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, Tanzania, as well as Myanmar. The new policy, unlike the previous directives order, will allow short-term travels of nationals of the listed countries.
