Introduction
Conceptual Framework- Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Model
- Focus on the relationship between the nurse and the patient
- Developed to help in psychiatric nursing
- Has four phases which are orientation, identification, exploitation, and resolution
Peplau’s Interpersonal model focus on the relationship between the nurse and the patient. Before publishing the Interpersonal Relations Model in 1952, Peplau identified that establishing a positive relationship between the nurse and the patient was essential in improving the recovery rate of the patient. Peplau developed and published the conceptual framework for the purse of improving the intervention procedures in psychiatric nursing, but the framework has been adopted by the entire advanced nursing practice.
In the use of the conceptual framework, Peplau identified four phases that nurses had to undertake. The first phase is the orientation where the nurse meets and gets to know, defines, and understand the problem affecting the patient. After defining the problem, the nurse proceeds to identify the relevant intervention procedures for the patient’s condition. In the third phase, the nurse exploits the best intervention method that cannot have negative effects on the patients. After the identification of the best intervention method, the nurse then proceeds to the final phase of solving the problem.
Reason for choosing Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Model
The conceptual framework helps nurses in;
- Understanding the patient’s problem through orientation
- It helps the nurse in identifying the possible intervention methods for the patient’s condition
- The framework helps the nurse explore the best intervention method for the patient
In advanced nursing practice, I will apply the conceptual framework in psychiatric nursing.
Nursing Model – Metaparadigm Concept.
- Set of nursing concepts that provide ideas on how a nursing discipline should function.
- Consist of four basic concepts which are
- Personal concept
- Environmental Concept
- Health concept
- Nursing concept
The Metaparadigm is a collection of various nursing theories, concepts of models that provide an idea of how a given nursing discipline should function in order to achieve quality healthcare for the patients. The metaparadigm involves the application of four basic concepts.
- The personal concept focuses on the individual who is receiving the care from the nurse. This concept also expands to include the family of the patient. The personal concept is designed to consider the personal needs of the patient such as healthcare, spiritual and social needs.
- Environmental concept focus on the patient’s surroundings and how the surroundings affect the welfare of the patient. The environmental concept includes both the external and internal environments of the patient.
- Health concept refers to the extent to which the patient can be able to access healthcare services without struggling. This concept covers all forms of health issues including mental wellness and the need for improved well-being for the senior citizens.
- The nursing concept involves the ability of nurses to deliver quality health care services to the patients. The ability of the nurse to deliver quality health care is dependent on the working environment and the relationship established between the nurse and the patient.
Why is choose Metaparadigm Concept
- It provides a guide to patients on how to provide quality health care services
- It focuses on the wellness of the patient
- It is applicable in all nursing disciplines.
Theory- Anne Casey Nursing theory
The theory focuses on the working relationship between the nurse, child, and family of the child.
I chose the theory because it concentrates specifically on the treatment of children and it can also be adopted in the treatment of any other patient.
Theory concepts
- Child
- Family
- Health
- Environment
- Nurse
The five concepts of Anne Casey Nursing model have been widely used in research to try and understand how they influence the recovery of the child. Research has identified the cooperation offered by the family towards an ailing child very important in the recovery process of the child. The health status of the child and a positive environment has also been identified having an impact on how long a child will take to recover. Also, the relationship established between the child and the nurse has an impact on the recovery process of the child.
How to use the theory
Upon graduation, the theory will enable me to;
- Establish a positive relationship with the child
- Encourage family members of the patient to be part of the child’s recovery process
- Ensure the environment is safe for the fast recovery of the patient.
Conclusion
- Peplau’s Interpersonal relations model, Metaparadigm, and Anne Casey Model of nursing fit together because they all focus on collaborative efforts to ensure patients receive quality health care.
- They all focus on creating a conducive environment and establishing positive relations between the nurse, patient, and the patient’s family.
