Various ways to manage obesity
Literature Review
Obesity is a condition that involves excessive levels of fat in the body, resulting in health problems. A person suffering from the disorder may exhibit one or more of the symptoms of being overweight, abdominal obesity, or back pain. Obesity occurs when an individual has a body mass index of 30 or higher. Overeating and making little movement can cause obesity as the body does not burn off the surplus energy. Thus, the extra energy gets stored as fat, which becomes toxic to the body over time. Various ways to manage obesity include lifestyle changes, medications, and surgery. The disorder can occur in both children and adults.
A study conducted by Hales, Carroll, Fryar, and Ogden (2020) shows that between 1999 and 2018, the prevalence of obesity took an upward trend from 30.5% to 42.4 %. There has been a rise in medical expenses for obesity over the years. In the United States, the condition demanded $147 billion in 2008, making the medical costs of people with obesity to be $1,429 higher than those of regular weight.
Obesity can inspire chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and sleep apnea. According to Finegood (2012), obesity affects society as much as it affects an manage. Research done concerning obesity should focus on the solutions that have been proven to work and not specific isolated causes. New ways need to be implemented in curbing complex societal problems like obesity, where individuals and organizations make their contributions in the initiatives.
