Virtual Reality
Virtual reality uses computer technology to create a simulated environment. End-users are enabled to interact in realistic three-dimensional situations (Seipel 2). Simulated environments are visited via wired clothing and stereophonic video goggles. The paper seeks to explore whether virtual reality is more than just fun.
Virtual Reality in Rehabilitation Exercise
Training via virtual reality improves concentration through reducing distraction of events and objects in the real world. A study was done in 2011(14) where fifteen stroke patients were assigned to a virtual reality group while thirteen were assigned to a control group in receiving rehabilitation training. The former group showed greater improvement compared to their counterparts in memory related tests and visual attention (Shi Cao 4). Virtual reality makes exercises interesting and motivating through increasing degrees of interaction and immersion.
Virtual Reality in Designing, Planning and Modeling
In designing, interior designers are able to visualize their sketches. In modeling, artists watch in real-space and real time how the modeled object will be. Modeling of surfaces can be done since the technology enables user to see and feel the surface under her fingertips (Mazuryk and Gervautz 9).Use in design, modeling and planning is just but another use other than for fun.
Education and Training
Medical students can be trained via virtual reality to perform surgery of the heart, eye and leg. Virtual reality allows easier view of natural phenomena appearance. A teacher may use virtual reality to teach history by visiting a virtual museum (Mazuryk and Gervautz 9). Management of various companies are currently applying the technology in training their staff members.
In Cooperative Working
Shared virtual environments which are network based boost collaboration among remote users. According to Mazuryk and Gervautz (12), practical application of virtual reality is performance of complex tasks by astronauts in open space. Another use is, training of many soldiers in inspection of dangerous areas. It makes cooperative working more efficient when used.
In a nutshell virtual reality is more than just fun. It is applied in modeling, design and planning. Training and education has been improved through its application. Rehabilitation exercises have been made more effective as well as cooperation between remote end users.
