Visual Arts Concepts and Strategies

This activity is essential in acquainting the elementary-level learners with art. The activity includes both advanced and straightforward artwork, which makes it fit for the students with different IQ levels. The strength of this activity is the ability to serve the needs of learners with different levels of development. For beginners, they can just trace the hand and make simple designs and patterns within the diagrams, and for those who are much advanced, their skills can challenge themselves with the advanced patterns. The other strength of growth is the ability of the activity to use the readily available resources despite that are readily available in the school. These strengths provide room for growth because, as soon as the students exploit different designs in the hand line design, they can try other complicated designs, which provides room for growth. Besides, this design triggers the students to think and come up with their designs that show their advancement in the art. The other opportunity for growth, as depicted with the art, is that the students will start by a simple design that advances with time in the beginning. This shows room for growth because the students advance from one design to the other. They can barely exhaust the designs and patterns in this activity. For instance, this design starts with a simple trace of a hand that has no markings. However, it ends with a perfect art pierce, and this shows the sign of growth amongst the learners. Finally, the activity considers the students’ cognitive level, and that is why it comes with different patterns, designs, and levels of advancements.

If I taught this activity, what I would do differently is to differentiate the patterns used in the course of the activity. This is important because not all the students could be in a position to do so. My design will vary from the simple ones to advanced ones, and the students will be required to go through the steps in order to achieve the final art. For example, I would ensure that all the students are able to race their hands before going to the next step. Next, I would make them draw the simple zigzags to ensure that they are not left behind. Also, I would use different colors instead of the plain pen, which would attract the learners’ attention because they probably have different tastes when it comes to colors. This will act as a way of attracting the learners into taking part in this activity. Further, the students have already used colors and crayons in the past, which means they are familiar with them.  I would also give the learners some freedom to come up with their designs and patterns provided they are using the hand line design as the main outline. This will enable the learners to be creative and make some efforts to come up with the best designs ever. All these approaches will enhance the overall teaching experience and motivate the learners to participate.
