Which is Worse: Being Overweight, Underweight, or are they Both Equally Bad?
The effective management of food intake and nutrition are both key to good health. Some food substances that people consume include; proteins, carbohydrates, fats and mineral salts. Nutrition is important for growth and development as well as health and wellbeing. However, large intake or misuse of these food substances may be disastrous to the body. In light of this, this paper focuses on the disadvantages of being both overweight and underweight.
Body mass index is the device used to show overweight, underweight or normal body weight. It measures an individual’s weight in relation to their height and provides a score to help place them in a certain category. One can be described as being overweight if the body mass index reads from 25- 29.9 and when the waist size is more than 35 inches for women and 40inches for men. People who are overweight may experience various risks of health problems which include; heart diseases, diabetes, stroke, pregnancy problems, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. There is no advocated merit for being overweight.
Underweight is another problem brought about by poor nutrition. This normally occurs when the body lacks enough nutrients build strong bones, hair and skin. It can show as many health concerns to a person as being overweight. Some of issues experienced by underweight individuals include, skin, hair or teeth problems, getting sick frequently, fatigue, anemia, irregular periods and impaired growth. Just like overweight, being underweight is equally harmful to the body (Bould et al., 2020).
Arguably, it is essential for one to have the normal body size and weight. That is, one should not be overweight or underweight. In my view, both overweight and underweight are equally harmful.
