Why do you like musicals?
Throughout history, musicals have been a great source of entertainment for the general population, coming to the present day. I have been a huge fan of musicals, and I do not see that changing in the foreseeable future. One of the reasons for my liking of musicals is their dynamic nature (Henson & Pickering, 2017). Musicals combine different aspects of entertainment, for instance, acting, singing, and dancing, in their delivery. This diverse delivery of musicals makes their presentation very entertaining and unpredictable. The other reason why I like musicals is that they act as reflectors of the current society. In the early years of the twenty-first century, musical theatres provided a platform for the gay to express themselves, something that was not openly discussed in society.
Why has your choice stayed your #1 all this time?
My favorite musical of all time is La La Land, the film. The musical is a film production though there were speculations that the producers may mount a stage show for the same film. I developed a liking for this particular musical because of the setting of the film. The film is based on two individuals, Mia and Sebastian, who are struggling to make it in the broadway industry, but the odds are not on their side. However, the dedication to achieve their dreams, which is what brought them together, threatens to break their love affair (Kermode, 2017). The film is a motivator for me, showing that with dedication, resilience, and determination, anyone can achieve anything in life. In addition to that, I like films with a good love story, a relatable love story, and one which inspires about the existence of good things in this currently inhuman world.
What is your favorite aspect of it? Any comments on scenery, costumes, lighting, sound?
I am a lover of good music. That being said, I found the soundtrack to the movie to be particularly entertaining. Songs like ‘Another day in the sun’ and ‘City of Stars’ among others form the impressive list of songs performed in the film. These songs are relatable and awaken the desire to dance. Additionally, the “A lovely night” scene is a favorite for me. The way the two main characters sing and dance in different dancing styles is not only captivating but also involves humor. The scene is filmed in a viewpoint where the two overlook the city below (Kermode, 2017). The beautiful scenery, coupled with the lighting encourages romance between the two.
