WHY IS IT DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE FREEDOM

“War is Peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. These are the beliefs that the citizens of Oceania ’’according to Orwell’s “1984” reports that community is overseen and controlled by an authoritarian group called the Party and a secretive character called big brother, who could be a fictional character, an imaginary figure that controls citizens’ intellect and their activities. Orwell depicts, each citizen is under steady observation by the authorities, basically by private telescreens. A totalitarian government describes a government marked by a political power which applies supreme and centralized control, and in which the state directs each domain of life. This is often the sort of world that the citizens of Oceania must live in, ruled by panic and terror each day.

Indeed this was a fiction novel since it reminds us how today’s world is, surveillance system such as CCTV cameras being displayed all overplays a colossal portion in our lives. We feel as though we are being observed 24/7 just as Winston and his colleagues were watched on nineteen eighty-four fiction characters. The question that comes in our mind is that are we really free or is there such a thing called freedom? It is impossible to determine whether human beings can be free. I do believe that some freedom is possible, but any attempt to prove freedom through reason or empirical evidence it becomes impossible. All we can do is uncover many of the ways human beings are not free and then hope or have faith that something is left that we may call freedom” (Abdu et al.,2019). This proves that there is no complete freedom; there are rather degrees of freedom. Some societies or people are more liberated than others.

In the regime of 1984 people living in under hard national, they were frustrated, and this made them have fear as well as hatred towards each and the government. People did not have freedom since they were treated with cruelty, and it was hard to know the truth, and this made people live an unstable life. The terror that was enforced by the Party leads to the mind of the people to be unstable. According to the novel ordinary people lived under the mercies of their delusion as well as prejudices since there was no freedom. The working-class people are the only hope in Russia according to 1984, Winston says “that the common man and woman would embrace doublethink as enthusiastically and, without the need for terror or torture, would choose to believe that two was whatever they wanted it to be” (de Jong, 2018). There was no civilization since it was damaged by war, revolution and civil conflict. Winston together with Julia were captured and taken to the prison the police agent called Mr.  Charrington reveals them to the police. The reason why Winston was arrested because of interacting with a person who had committed a different crime this clearly shows people had no freedom to do what they wanted, they were restricted to whom they should speak with, by being though to be a criminal he is tortured and starved and he was told to cure himself of insanity so that he could change the way he perceived thing so as to fit in the thinking of Party.He is not given the room to be free and make a decision whether he wants the Party or not, he is forced to be in it and once he agrees then he will be released from the prison.

The Party creates groups just like the Spies, which educates young children to turn against their parents and report them to the Thought Police on the off chance that they suspect that their parents not being faithful and entirely committed to the Party.

In conclusion, The thought police in George Orwell’s dystopian novel nineteen eighty-four of criminal psychology and widespread observation through sources, telescreens, and microphones to screen and capture citizens of Oceania who would commit a thought crime is similar Charon’s clarification of freedom.
