- Executive Summary
Good Samaritan Foundation is a UK based foundation serving humanitarian needs in Northern Nigeria. The organization majorly deals with serving the human services needs of the internally displaced people in Northeast Nigeria that have been affected by clashes and the ongoing Boko Haram terrorist activities that have resulted in great human suffering in the region. Good Samaritan foundation services include humanitarian services that involve providing basic needs such as medication, food, hygiene items to the displaced persons living in the tents. The organization is also involved in crisis intervention through the provision of food, emergency medical care by traveling to the victims’ homes to provide these services. Furthermore, the organization focuses on global campaigns that are meant to create awareness on the right of women and children to education and against violence. Lastly, the organization offers advocacy services in spearheading the right of vulnerable groups such as women and children. Women and children entail the most affected groups by the ongoing clashes and terrorist attacks in Northern Nigeria. Some of the tragedies that the women have had to endure include sexual violence, GBV, among other lack of necessities like sanitary towels, which has affected their self-esteem.
As a result of this, the Good Samaritan Foundation has focused efforts in alleviating the lives of the affected by providing counseling services, basic necessities, and empowerment skills that can help them become self-sustainable and take care of their families. The organization has also made a great effort in creating awareness on the rights of the women and campaigning against sexual violence, gender-based, among many other social injustices that that is attached to backward cultural beliefs that the victims go through. Good Samarians have made a tremendous contribution to improving the lives of the victims. The ongoing Covid19 crisis has seen the majority of the well-wishers who contribute different items to help the women, such as sanitary towels and food unable to. The poor conditions in the camps have accelerated. This has
left women to bear the burden of taking care of the families and themselves, yet they are incapacitated. The current crowded situation and poor health conditions in the camps are leading to a high probability of making the Covid19 virus more contagious. Without immediate intervention, the research carried out in the camps shows that there might be 100% infections among the victims should the outbreak of the disease be recorded in an individual living in the camp. The women are enduring challenges such as lack of food, sanitation, and medicine. The Covid-19 Mutual Aid for Vulnerable Women and Children in North-East Nigeria program targets to assist the victims from rural areas and IDP camps of Taraba and Nasarawa.
Good Samaritan Foundation seeks $100,000 to assist in managing the Covid19 crisis among the women and children living in these camps. The amount will be used in providing personal hygiene items, Covid19 protecting gears, food, and medication, among other economic sustainability measures. The program is meant to run for the next six months. The good Samaritan Foundation will also offer counseling services to women who are currently suffering from anxiety disorders due to the prevailing situation. The expected outcome for the program includes reducing the probability of the spread of infections in the camps, gender-based violence as a result of a lack of basic necessities, and empower women to become self-sustainable in the future.
- Context and Situation Analysis
Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria has led to deaths of almost a hundred thousand people, and more than 2 million have been displaced, leaving greater burdens on families and children. According to a study conducted by the UNDP, the majority of the women have been left to take care of the families after the husbands succumb to the clashes and terrorist activities. These women are forced to take care of a family with 4-6 children, yet they do not have any source of income. In addition, the women in IDP camps are faced with reproductive health issues due to the poor sanitation conditions in the camps. Furthermore, the majority of the victims have suffered from sexual and gender-based violence, which has led to some of the succumbing to mental illness. A study conducted by UNDP shows that the COvid-19 outbreak is expected to accelerate the worse situation in the North-East Nigeria IDP camps due to poor infrastructure, crowded situations, and lack of proper sanitation.
Currently, the region has 1.8 million displaced persons, among which the highest population are women and children. Research from the UNDP shows that the majority of the camps in the region, such as Taraba and Nasarawa, are highly congested with a capita space of less than 15m2. Before the onset of Covid 19, the research carried out in these camps showed that there was a high probability of contagious diseases such as normal flue spreading among the victims at a high rate due to the living conditions. The onset of the Covid1-19, which is more contagious, is expected to lead to massive infections and probably loss of lives if no measures are taken. The women have endured their own health and also the health of their children. This aggravated human suffering has also led to the majority of the women turning into vices such as sexual favors, as documented by the UNDP report.
Therefore, there is a need to help these victims during this pandemic than before. The Covid-19 Mutual Aid for Vulnerable Women and Children in North-East Nigeria program aims at meeting the human needs of these women and providing psychological support in order to help them support their families. The program will provide Covid-19 protecting gears such aa s mask, gloves, sanitizers, among others. The program will also provide training in the significance of keeping hygiene as a measure of reducing the spread of the disease. Lastly, the program will provide counseling therapy support to the victim in order to reduce the impact of mental illness and disorders and incorporate economic sustainability measurers. The program will target teenage girls and women of all ages.
- The rationale for WPHF’s support
Problem Statement
As Nigeria and other African countries are putting in place different measures to curb the impact of the Covid19 pandemic, the WHO has announced that the disease is likely to pose a great challenge among the African nations. African nations such as Nigeria suffers from the poor health system, which lacks basic health care facilities. The onset of the pandemic has worsened the situation in public health care due to outstretched resources. Even though the general population in Nigeria is likely to suffer, the vulnerable groups living in IDP are likely to encounter the impact of the pandemic the most. This is due to the poor sanitation conditions in these regions. The Taraba and Nasarawa have already been declared as high health risk habitat before the Covid-19 pandemic. The onset of the pandemic is likely to increase the rate of infections, with the majority of the women being affected. Healthy eating and keeping standards of hygiene are some of the recommended ways to curb the pandemic. However, in these settings, the lack of food is already leading to malnourished children. Poor hygiene with women lacking basic necessities such as sanitary pads is likely to aggravate the already poor conditions. Therefore. Good Samaritan Foundation has been at the forefront of providing these services. However, with the onset of Covid19, the organization has been unable to secure funds from well-wishers. This has been hard for the organization to continue with this noble course. From our ground research, the majority of the women in the camps are experiencing health deterioration due to stress that comes with the uncertainty of the Covid-19, which is also accompanied by their living conditions. Therefore, receiving the funds will be a ray of hope to women and their families living in these camps.
