585661-Unit I Journal: Strategies to Minimize Risk from Disasters
According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the extent of changes in climate, which has increased the world’s vulnerability to disasters, is adversely affecting the community, especially in terms of development and survival. Communities are exposed to unprecedented challenges whose impacts are felt by both the developed, developing, and less developed countries. Among these hazardous exposures are natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, storms, and drought, which are accompanied by mounts of losses that drag a chunk of the world down with. In this light, the UNDP offers mitigation strategies that may help increase resilience while building a risk-informed and disaster-free society viable for human survival and sustainable development. It emphasizes the need for communities to embrace disaster risk reduction (DRR), which not only minimizes losses but also assists in the achievement of millennium developmental goals. The program provides for communities to ensure that DRR is a priority with a staunch institution basis for enactment.
More so, it encourages early identification, assessing, and monitoring of disaster risks to enhance prior warning. Also, communities are encouraged to use knowledge and education means to communicate and build a safe and resilient culture. I think my community should adopt the early identification, assessment, and monitoring of disasters strategy to ensure prior preparedness in cases of disasters. In this light, I think implementation may be achieved through education and training programs to help various disaster management groups (DMGs) earn equitable skills that would help in disaster detection. I feel this is the best strategy since response comes after preparedness. Therefore, through this strategy, it is where the other phases of disaster management-response and recovery-follow suit.
