Use of Firewall for Computer Security

According to Rouse (2020), a firewall is referred to as the system that is designed to regulate and prevent access to and from a private network by unauthorized person. It, therefore, establish a restriction between unknown external parties that pose a threat to the security of the software.  Firewall security is a physical software that tends to block the increase and spread of computer attacks.

According to Rouse (2020), four primary firewall techniques include packet filters tasked to examine all the packets that enter or leave the network. It either accepts or rejects the packet depending on the user’s rules. The application gateways secure some specified applications, such as FTP servers. The circuit-level portals provide security techniques when a connection of TCP or UDP is established. Finally, the proxy server controls the movement of messages that are either sent or received by the system. Firewalls can hide the network addresses to prevent hackers from accessing the system.

A firewall is crucial in the implementation of security policies and safety measures in many organizations. To control the accessibility of some essential network services, firewall plays this role by giving access to selected groups. To monitor and evaluate network traffic, we can comfortably use a firewall (Rouse 2020). Finally, suspicious and harmful network activities can be tracked and reported by the firewall.

Conversely, a firewall cannot detect attacks that are carried out within the network.  Firewall filters only intruders that pass through it. It will, therefore, not be capable of discovering a hacker that has a way of going around. For firewall to operate, it mandatory to have a well structured and established security policy. firewall’s ability to protect and filter will be limited if permission is granted
