Management on domestic waste in Thimphu
The municipal management on domestic waste in Thimphu is one of the most emotive environmental issues which represent the waste sustainability. Basically it is the work of the local authorities to manage the irregular and improper dumping which may lead to an unhealthy community. Mainly, the improper dumping disturbs the natural ecosystem. However, Thimphu is usually associated with population increase which is a big pressure to the local authority of which it is important to have modern landfill and incinerator facilities. Significantly, the use of innovative technologies will help in the concept of developing the Eco-city. Changing of living styles are driving to the increase of waste in the cities and especially in Thimphu. Nevertheless, the current use of landfills may not solve the problem but the use of incinerators may be the better option but if it is proper maintained. The approaches of the Solid Waste Management together with the partaking policy management play a significant role in sustaining the eco-city. There are also waste pickers who help in a way and get some amount like 100 dollars per month and work for about three days per week. Identically, these waste pickers transfer the waste to the landfill but this has been seen as littering and dumping and not helpful to the environment.
Disposable diapers are becoming a problem in Thimphu whereby many people have started to use them and they do not degrade them well even in the landfills. The local authorities should come up with a proper way on how to dispose these diapers together with some household waste which contain hazardous and are electronic (Gyelmo 2018). Notably these wastes are like batteries, phones bulbs as well as televisions and laptops which leads to the increasing amount of e-waste. Therefore, the National Environmental Commission in Thimphu should monitor the city water resources which are said to be healthy but at the macro level, the increasing population, sewerage treatment as well as solid waste collection pose threats to the water quality towards the downstream areas.
