A crisis is any event that leads to intense difficulty causing dangerous situations that affect the society. Currently, the world is facing a global health crisis of our time, known as coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Besides being a health crisis, COVID-19 has created devastating political, social, and economic crisis globally. The effects mean that countries have to act immediately to prepare, respond, and recover from the disaster. Managers globally can draw experience from how states and governments have handled various outbreaks and crises in the past.
World War 2 was a global war that lasted from 1939-1945. The war brought with it the need for various countries to enlarge their increasing military demand for armaments. Most Americas industries converted to military production to strengthen its economy. Major automakers in America, which were lagging because of the war, turned to aircraft production to remain in the market. COVID-19 has caused various companies to close down; hence managers can convert their output to medical supplies. Production of facemasks, ventilators, and medical clothing can help raise the business’s financial status when there is a decline in the economy. Italy’s Armani, which is a fashion industry, has converted to the production of medical overalls to help curt the shortage of protective and medical equipment in the health system. Conversion of production will help raise more profits and reduce the number of companies closing down.
HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa made countries like Senegal to adopt aggressive ways to reduce the spread of the disease. The state launched an effective epidemiological surveillance system to monitor the spread of the disease. Intensive information campaigns involving political, religious, and traditional leaders. Adopting preventive measures such as a change in sexual practices and the use of condoms was mobilized. Managers today can adapt to the efforts used by Senegal during COVID 19. They were surveying to determine the rate of infection and organizing information campaigns about COVID-19 to educate the masses. The adoption of preventive measures such as the use of facemask and sanitizing at various points by citizens can help in reducing the spread of the virus. China, one of the most affected countries, has adopted some of the steps, such as placing its citizens under mandatory lockdown. Citizens in the country have also been asked to wear facemasks and sanitize as the state does more surveillance to reduce the spread of the virus.
Nigeria was one of the countries that were able to handle the disease during the Ebola outbreak in Africa. The team that managed the condition did contact tracing of the affected people, followed by isolation and diagnosis at the country’s virology laboratory. The government did information campaigns and financial support. Today, managers can contact tracing of those who have got contact with positive patients and place them under isolation as they perform tests on them. The managers can also offer financial support to help in defensive operations. Managers worldwide can respond by setting, communicating, and promoting the adoption of evidence-based norms, standards, policies, technical strategies, and guidelines, as discussed in this paper.
