Free Will/Minority Report Movie

Free will is the ability to choose how people act without being forced depending on one’s behavior; for example, one decides to commit a crime or not unless he is insane or a minor. A person is squarely liable and responsible for their actions and behaviors, which may be influenced by past events.

Determinism is an approach where it believes that any behavior has a source or origin which is predictable. At the same time, free will is influenced by either internal or external factors that we do not have control over.

In the film Minority Report, the morality of pre-crime is tested where it reflects on free will and determinism of a person. A person free will be determined by the choices he has and self-control on whether to commit a crime or not. Determinism will be reliable, but people have free will to choose that will shape their morality. The minority report believes that the future is predetermined, where murders can be predicted using pre-cogs. The crimes can be previsualized where visions are received to determine and to show what crime you can commit in the future. To uphold morality, one can choose to abandon the crime when you remember the criminal justice system that punishes criminals.

The film on Minority Report portrays John Anderton, who is a pre-crime chief who anticipates killing a man in the future called Leo Crow. Agatha foresaw this Anderton’s future crime and approached him to find out what was happening in his life and convinced him he still has a choice not to kill Crow, but he was determined to commit the crime. Because of free will and determinism, Anderton did not commit the crime because he had a choice not though he was bitter Crow kidnapped his son and murdered him. Anderton decided to arrest Crow instead of killing him, showing that people have free will and determinism where options or alternatives are available not to commit a crime. Furthermore, it deduces that in the future, morality can be upheld where crimes can be detected before they occur; hence, reducing the crime rates. It has, therefore, sparking debate on free will vs. determinism and how free will alter the future and whether pre-cogs will be accurate and take over on choices people will make.
