ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

In this discussion, you will be working with classmates to learn more about biomes, identify producers and consumers within your own selected example of a terrestrial biome, learn how to properly write species names, and describe the niche of one of your selected organisms. You will use information from your textbook Chapter 8 to learn about biomes and to learn about consumers, producers, and the niches they fill in an ecosystem. Also, review the information link on scientific species names provided in the additional required viewing and reading page. Each of you will then select one of the terrestrial biomes listed in Infographic 8.4 (pages 144 and 145) that you would like to explore further. Multiple students can select the same biome, so let your curiosity guide you! For this discussion: Introduce yourself with your name. State the terrestrial biome you have selected, and include a sentence or two stating what specifically interests you about this biome that has you wanting to learn more about it. Provide a working link, or an attachment, to one reliable scientific source that has information about your biome. Check, after posting, to see that your link works, or that your attachment opens! Give a brief desсrіption of some of the features that are characteristic of this biome. At minimum, include information about the climate (temperature, precipitation), global extent, and main vegetation that characterizes the biome. Provide a working link, or attachment, to a unique source of information that gives a specific example of an ecosystem within your selected biome. This means one identifiable, specific location! ″Desert southwest″ for example, isn′t specific enough; ″The Mojave Desert of Southern California and Nevada″ is specific enough! ″Central American Rainforest″ is not specific enough; ″Corcovado Rainforest″, is! State the location of your biome′s example (i.e. Corcovado Rainforest is located in Costa Rica). Then, provide information on the following for your specific location: (You may find all of this information from the link you already provided, or you may need to find additional sources of information. If you do need to find additional sources, provide the additional link. Note that if you have only a common name for a species in your original source, you can easily do a search for its scientific name.) Give the common name and the scientific name of two producers that can be found at your location. Give a brief desсrіption of each. Provide the common name and scientific name of two consumers that can be found at your location. Give a brief desсrіption of each. For ONE of your consumers, describe the ″niche″ that it has in the ecosystem. (What is its ″job″?) Finally, describe one major impact that humans have had that threatens or damages this particular biome. You may need to find another source of information for human impacts – if so, include a link! RESPONSE: Respond to at least 1 other group member′s post on a specific example of a biome. In your response, Greet the student with their name. State why you found their example interesting – would you like to visit? Is one of the plants or animals they discuss of interest to you? Provide a working link to one additional, unique source of information about their biome – it can be information about their particular location, or an example from a different location where this biome exists on the planet.
