Police misconduct is ironic to most people as they are responsible for ensuring legal conduct among the citizens. An incoming Chief of Police at the state department is experiencing numerous troubles at the workplace, with one of the oldest employees inciting the rest not to follow the superiors’ order. Given the circumstances, the new Chief of Police should consider filing a formal complaint against the employee and outline clear expectations by introducing performance standards and reviews.
The officer exhibits this character for a while, and the misdemeanor has a significant effect on the organization, yet, the officer is not willing to make the issue right. According to Zeman (2016), police officers may submit internal formal complaints about their peers or juniors if the problem persists for a while, is a violation of organizational ethics, reflects unfair discrimination, and exceeds operational interventions. In this case, the officer frustrates the new boss’s efforts by inciting others not to obey his orders. The officer continues in this demeanor for a while, and efforts by the new boss to sort out the issue are futile due to the adamancy of the stubborn employee. Similarly, the act is a violation of organizational ethics as the case affects the operations of the base. Further, the organization expects senior employees to report such persons for disciplinary actions. As such, the complaint letter against this employee should include statements regarding the employees’ adamancy to solve the issue and the ethical impact it has on other staff and organizational operations.
The second option calls for police leaders to clearly describe the expectations of individual staff and conduct regular appraisals and reviews to ensure the institution’s better performance. Stephens (2011) reveals that this helps to increase the individual performance of police officers, ensure adherence to institutional policies, limit the grouping effect, and identify unproductive members. Initiating reporting strategies for individual officers’ performance helps managers ensure that each officer performs effectively and allows the leaders to take actions against non-preforming individuals. The case would enable the Chief of police to bring the station back to control and assume power over all his juniors.
This study’s scenario reveals that the police chief needs to file an official complaint against the stubborn officer and task officers to respond to orders accordingly. The first case would seek redress for the disrespectful employee, while the second option would ensure discipline among the junior officers. These two strategies may help the leader to counter these hitches and stand out among the rest.
