Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy is, indeed, a field that is growing in popularity in today’s society. Although most people assume that they can manage the services offered by the therapists, it is a fact their services are essential and can only be realized through community education. The professionals can help to reduce many accidents in different fields that are likely to occur due to society’s ignorance. The video has changed my thinking completely about occupational therapy. Before watching the video, I was one of the people who criticized the idea of consulting a professional to help you decide when you can stop driving. Practically, most things in life improve with experience. As a result, it is expected that individuals are likely to become better drivers as they grow old. The notion can be supported by the fact young people cause many accidents that occur on the roads across the globe. After listening to the video, I have realized that the concept can be explained by the fact that there are many youths on the road than the old and that young people drive recklessly.
I feel challenged by the speaker on the issue of undertaking a driving evaluation for the old and signing an agreement as a family on when a family member should cease driving. Before watching the video, I would never support such a notion. However, I now believe that even though my grandmother could be very careful when driving, there are other factors, such as health issues, that determine the occurrence of accidents too. It is a fact human beings start experiencing vision problems and body weakness as they age. As a result, they are at a higher risk of causing accidents. I am contemplating having a discussion with my family on the issue. This would help reduce the likelihood of accidents.
The speaker was very accurate on the issue of transportation planning and offered informed advice on the alternatives that are available once one is beyond the pre-determined date of driving cessation. However, I feel the speaker did not exhaust the options that in case of an older person who insists on driving even though the family is concerned about the person’s safety. I would recommend that the speaker offered advice on how to overcome such challenges.
In conclusion, I agree with the speaker that safe driving can is strongly linked to fragility and not competence when it comes to older adults. The video was enlightening, and I believe the concept of occupational therapy is more beneficial than I thought.
