What Is a Consumer?

Video Critical Analysis

In the video, “what is a consumer” by Kitty Kyle, the logic behind the concept of consumption is correlated with the idea of standing in line for long periods to buy a product, an aspect that confuses Kyle. Although Kyle identifies the concept of consumption as a verb function at the beginning of the video, she further complicates the concept with the ability to do something such as destroy 22 spans wastefully or squander something, an aspect that goes beyond the verb function of consumption. However, the key aspect of the video is merely to find the relationship the concept of consumption and standing in line for something, such as a piece of bread. Nonetheless, the main idea behind Kitty Kyle video is to understand human behaviour within the perspective of a consumer.

Kitty Kyle begins to evaluate the concept of consumption by defining it is a verb, an aspect that is accurate when defining the concept of a consumer. This is because consume is an action that one performs to derive some form of satisfaction. For example, it is purely appropriate when Kitty Kyle uses the idea of “eat or drink, especially in large quantity” to assess the definition of a consumer. Economically, a consumer is somebody that spends or acquire a good or service for the benefits of one satisfaction, an aspect that Kitty Kyle gets right using her example in the video. However, when she further relates consumption or a consumer with “standing in line” in a supermarket, she goes beyond the idea of a consumer.

Because there is no form of satisfaction or benefit derived from standing in line or walking in the sidewalk when relating it with the concept of consumption, an aspect that becomes a critical part of Kitty Kyle’s confusion. Standing in line or walking in a sidewalk is mandatory human behaviour that does not require one to pay for it. Sidewalks are usually public places that are free of charge and, therefore, their consumption is available to anyone at no cost. However, the concept of a consumer or consume requires an exchange of one good for another, in any case, money. Therefore, because people do not have to pay to walk on a sidewalk or stand in line, the idea of consumption is changed.

Conversely, when Kitty Kyle relates the word “consume” with standing in line or walking in the sidewalk, the meaning of a consumer is changed. Moreover, a consumer must be able to make a transaction for personal use, an aspect that is changed when the use of a sidewalk is applied in the video. Although Kitty Kyle tends to relate consume with the ability to eat or drink something, she fails to evaluate consumption as an action that transcends oral use to physical use. This is an aspect that is visible when Kyle compares eating bread by using a game consult as to the point of contention. Kyle seems to only define consume as a solely eating or drinking something.

However, consuming can also be an activity such as using a game consult and not only just eating or drinking something. Because Kyle does not evaluate the concept of the consumption as an action that is both oral and physical application, she becomes confused when other people from different countries or societies relate using a game consult and eating bread as a consumption. Therefore, Kitty Kyle needs to define and evaluate the concept of as an oral and physical application of an item.
