Economic evaluation
Conducting economic appraisal of public health interventions has been considered to have various challenges, and this paper expounds on some of the challenges. Despite the vast improvements in the healthcare sector, there proves to be great inequalities in the sector and these inequalities pose great challenge when it comes to the interventions (Kelly, McDaid, Ludbrook, & Powell, 2005). The inequalities could be termed a result of discrepancies present in resource allocations and as such, the inequalities lead to lack of an effective intervention to do the economic appraisal. It is however recommended to study where the bias could be coming from if the inequalities are to be eradicated.
The other possible challenge is the mediation of role of behavior change. This could be asociated with the difficulty that arises when there is need to have the pubic changing a particular behavior (Kelly, McDaid, Ludbrook, & Powell, 2005). For the desired outcome to be achieved, various measures should be considered such as modeling the behavior into an economic analysis and the connection between the behavior change and economic analysis tends to be a challenge that should be tackled if an intervention is to be effectively implemented. Understanding of various social factors have been termed to be essential if the issue of behavioral change is to be handled and such issues include crime rate and unemployment of a population. Other challenges include the separation of cause and effect as well as biological and social variations.
However, despite the challenges, interventions are still implemented and they achieve their intended purpose while others do fail. An example of economic evaluation in the USA that went well is the attempt to promote the mental health of employees at their workplaces (Kelly, McDaid, Ludbrook, & Powell, 2005). This have been achieved through increased employee involvement, availability of program that support the environment, as well as support the staff at the work place. As a result, fruits can be seen which include reduced absenteeism, increased productivity and profitability, and improved mental health for the employees.
