Nurse in the Congress
The qualification as a nurse does not block anyone from engaging in politics. Several nurses have taken the political path and have ended up in government either as legislators or other leaders in a political capacity. However, the election or even the appointment of a nurse into congress is one of the major steps towards making the nursing sector more effective than ever. The fact that a nurse knows the issues affecting the nursing field ensures that legislations are made to protect the nursing profession as well as to improve the general nursing sector. Lauren Underwood is one of the nurses who have been determined enough to join Congress after several years of serving in the nursing field.
The contribution of Lauren Underwood towards the improvement in the healthcare system has been evident for several years before her active engagement in politics. Before vying for the congressional seat, Underwood worked for the Medicaid plan and ensured that the plan provided a high-quality and cost-efficient medical plan (Malik, 2019). Lauren Underwood has made a significant contribution to the legislation that has been made both before and after her swearing-in into the Congress to serve as the representative of the Illinois Congressional district.
Lauren Underwood has been actively involved in the proposition and passing of several bills that have seen transformations in the healthcare system. Lauren Underwood introduced the Veteran Women healthcare act of 2019. Also, Underwood worked in collaboration with Adams to hold the Black maternal Health Caucus Summit that was aimed at solving the black maternal health crisis. Generally, Underwood has used the position in congress to work towards improving the healthcare system.
In sum, the involvement of nurses in leadership has been a positive step towards improving the healthcare system. Lauren Underwood has been active in fighting for transformations in the healthcare system since being sworn into Congress. Most of the bills supported by Underwood have been for the benefit of the healthcare system.
