Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning

Modern technology has revolutionized education, and more students now desire to study online while still socializing with their peers, watching podcasts, and engaging in discussions. While it may be easy and seamless to study online, there are multiple drawbacks associated with the activity. Online learning is cheap and takes less of one’s valuable time. There is no need to rent a building or pay expensive bills to facilitate learning. Additionally, students can learn at their own time and could have the freedom to choose their desired schedules. Online learning is also a source of self-motivation due to self-paced learning advantage. Students could choose to take courses from anywhere and at any time.

Online studying equips students with real-world skills such as emailing, web-browsing, and technical skills. It also exposes one to multiple opportunities such as online job advertisements, college applications, and also meeting valuable people from around the world. Besides, life-long learning is insured, as information is always available. Accessing the information also proves to be swift as materials can be requested through mechanisms such as searches.

Even with multiple advantages, various limitations are associated with online studying. Online studying creates a sense of isolation since students are physically absent in a classroom. It would, therefore, take much time to get in touch with their peers. Additionally, intense self-discipline is required for online education. Online media has much violent information that could distract students from covering all the tasks delegated to them by their teachers. Too much freedom could, therefore, interfere with the focus of a student. Nonetheless, online studying requires one to be competent in their technical skills. Students ought to understand how to engage with websites, blogs, and forums to navigate through their courses. There could also be too much workload with studying online as sometimes it could be difficult to find answers and resolve multiple challenges, especially from discussion forums.
