Analysis of Leadership Traits and strength
The medical field is a vital aspect of the society, which is so sensitive as it deals directly with people, and any mistake done might cause loose of life or injuries to the patient. To be a good leader in the medical field, emotional intelligence is an essential quality that one must possess. Emotional intelligence can be defined as the ability of an individual to have control over their own emotions and those around them (Northouse 2018). I firmly believe that Emotional intelligence in a leader enables them to make the right decisions for their team, patients, and themselves without been affected by their emotions. Having EI allows one to be objective and focus on the duty that they are meant to undertake without being influenced by their own emotions.
Emotional intelligence comes in mostly in a situation where a patient passes away, which affects those people who were involved in taking care of them. In this scenario, the aspects of EI for leaders have to kick in, which are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, social awareness, and relationship management. They should understand the feeling of grief that everyone is going through, but that should not affect how people work. I believe that a good leader should interact with their workmates and ensure that they stay objective by debriefing and checking on them regularly to ensure that their emotions do not affect the way they operate.
As mentioned earlier, emotional intelligence is vital, and people should ensure that they enhance their EI. Increasing EI can be done through improving one’s self-awareness, which done by recognizing one’s emotions and how they affect them, and that way, it is possible for one to control their emotions (Cote, 2017). The other strategy that can be used to enhance an individual’s EI has practical communication skills. I believe the way one communicates with others can control the other person’s emotions and their own.
In conclusion, I believe that EI is an essential aspect that all leaders should possess as it will help them lead their teams and organizations into success. Having control over one’s emotions plays a big part in their success, and it is contributed to by having self-awareness.
