Big Love
The theater artists of Big Love intended to address various controversial issues that repeatedly happen in society. The plays explore sexism, identity, marriage, and love, challenging the misconceptions about sexuality and gender that still exists today. The theater artists of Big love production, puts artistic, social, political, and technical issues all in one story (Burriss, 2002). The story provokes audiences to question the role of love and the roles the society has stereotyped for men and women. The story captures past and present-day to day experiences of the people, and the artists acted the play in a way that it made the audiences feel like they were part of the story. Therefore, Big love artists made the audience relate to the story.
Big love production team presented the play in ways that extensively and effectively explore the different themes of the story. The way the stage was introduced, the dressing of the characters, physicality presented by the producer, and flow of the story gave great elevation to the accomplishment of the artist’s intention. The set of the stage looked like an art installation and transferred mixed reactions to the people watching. The director and producer of the play instructed the stage be set in a way that it looked like another character in the play telling a particular story, communicating to the audience. Charles Mee, the writer of the story, included interesting and proper word choice making the play to look so experiential and causing a deep connection from the actors to the people (Mee,1998). Actors throw themselves against the wall and sing in voices showing the anguish, sadness, unfairness, and everything else the story wanted to inform the society.
Rebecca Naomi Jones staring as Lydia shows excellent performance. She unveils bold and dramatic chops throughout the paly scenes and presents women as brave. For instance, when she stormed in a scene with a torn filthy wedding dress, Lydia showed anguish in the boldest ways ever, especially when she stripped naked and jumped to the bathtub. Thyona played by Stacey Sergeant fearlessly plays on feminist’s principle (Cummings 2006). Thyona defies rules that promote male supremacy and plays a role in an engaging, hilarious way. The entire playing scene is bathed with amazing graphics of waves, a messy war scene with helicopters, and glass shattering, which fantastic gives relevant scenery to the story.
Big love production tells a story familiar to everyone and presents common issues, but in a unique way. Charles Mee story does not stick to any rule. Instead, the play is a messy, wild, beautiful, erotic, and fabulous piece of work. The Big Love theater artists used art to communicate majorly to society and make people learn a lot about who they are. People love identifying, feeling, and connecting to something, and that is the reason big love production is worthy of watching for many people. The play addresses real-life issues that people encounter daily, and the relationship between the play and life makes it more interesting to watch. The big love story never gets outdated, and that’s the more reason why the production was an amazing one.
