The emergence of popular culture was created from the expression of the industrial revolution in the late 1700s. This led to the birth of popular art items such as books and films, which were created for entertainment purposes rather than for financial gains; this was usually expressed through great artworks. In contemporary pop culture, it encompasses modern beliefs, ideologies, events, and social aspects of the society, all that is delivered through the media and expressed through visual and written means such as music, film, text, and dance, among other channels.
A clear example is through the television program “Dancing with the stars,” the show depicts the increasing popularity of popular dance which has a profound influence on the public domain. Through its demonstration of cultural and racial diversity by its unique and diabolical sense to fashion and showcase a diverse dancing style that demonstrates the cultural identity of different racial groups (305).The paper sets to evaluate the connection between dance performance and the construction of cultural and masculine identity.
Contrary to contemporary society, which has fought for equal representation and equality for both genders. Urban dance shows have not generally welcomed the move for female urban dance groups who have not been provided with the same play right and presence in the televised shows. Most dance shows deliberately sideline female representation in their expression of dance art. For the limited showcased dances, there has to be a male representative who would likely pair as a couple. Such circumstances demonstrate the female gender has not been entirely accepted in the dance show entertainment.
More so, dancing with the stars has prevalently tried to downplay homoerotic display between two dancers of the same gender. When the show decided to present a dance between two of its masculine contestants as a “bromantic farce.” The show well-choreographed dance moves between dancers validate the show’s message that disregarded same-sex partnering, and the step was deliberately done to experiment with the program viewership on the same-sex minority group. Moments like this depict the show’s focus on the more progressive viewership group and its consideration not to alienate its conservative audience who will find the show offensive to their principle and traditional beliefs.
Per the show’s depiction of popular culture,” Dancing with the stars: frames ballroom dancing that has been subjected in the American culture, this, however, does not reflect the conformation to the 21-century dance popularity that has recognized the hip-hop dance culture. Hip hop music gave birth to hip hop dance culture and positions the dance as an urban form of physical graffiti or dance expression through the music genre. With the development of technology in music videos, 20th century African American artists such as Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson introduced the form of dancing culture to new audiences, which was different from the cultures popular minority target and modified the styles in a choreographed and codified format. Increased popularity and showcasing of the dancing formats led to uniformity in terms of popularizing the dance art that was later referred to as “street dance” with originality in urban aesthetics. The popular dance culture has been termed to identified with the African American culture, which has been shown in the dance show on a limited basis not to conjure its widespread viewership.
