How has communication changed over the past 20 years?
The past several decades have seen an increase in technological advancement. The growth in technology has led to growth and change in the channels of communication. The growth has seen the development of ways of communication that are faster and more efficient than those that were in use 20 years ago. The development of technologies such as emails, video calling, and also phone calls has made communication more accessible and more reliable. The modes of communication that were available over 20 years ago, for instance, letters, were slow and time-consuming. Technology has helped in quicker communication, even where information has to be passed to people in different countries (Horrocks, 2016). This has led to better information passing and processing. It has also helped improve the response time as individuals can reply instantly to messages that have been sent to them. The last 20 years have seen communication become segmented and socialized, where small groups and movements have been empowered by the internet to become social. The change has led to more easy and extensive sharing of information through the internet and the social groups.
How can leaders and organizations continue to communicate effectively across all channels?
The changes in the modes of communication have offered leaders and organizations a more accessible way through which they can communicate. Using the new and easy techniques and platforms of communications available, the leaders and organizations can easily pass vital information. The platforms offer a quicker and easier way of circulating the information that needs to be passed around. Using the new methods of communication, the leaders and organizations can hold the meetings even when they are apart as there are channels that offer video conferencing. They can use them to hold important meetings also while they are not at the same locations. The availability of cheap and easily accessible modes of communication such as social media and other platforms have helped the leaders and the diverse from the traditional methods of communication that were expensive and time-consuming (Friedman, 2011). For organizations, they can pass the information they need to circulate digitally and reach more people within a short time than when they used the analog methods of communications. Leaders can also get information and feedback from their subjects quickly, and confidentiality, something the old ways of communication did not guarantee.
What problems have these changes caused?
The changes and development in communication have led to positive and negative effects on users and organizations. The events have come with putting the information of organizations at risk. Many people use the internet to collect information about organizations and people. When they know, they can use it against the organization, such as deciding to extort them so that they cannot make the information, which is private for the organization, public. Also, the methods of data have led to the creation of false information that is widely spread. The incorrect information is spread widely and hurts the organization and person (Bosamia, 2013). Verification on the validity of the data being passed has become hard; thus, many people cannot differentiate between the false information and the real information from the organization. Technology advancement is a continuous process, and it has become expensive for organizations to keep on updating their platforms to avoid being obsolete. This has led to organizations spending vast amounts of money to keep up with the developments.
