Change experiences
Change proposed
The change was the introduction of a week-long comprehensive training on how to handle COVID-19 patients, how to manage the disease, and how to protect ourselves in the line of duty.
Reasons why this change was proposed
This change was proposed to prepare us to incase patients with COVID-19 visit our hospital. With the rising number of cases, the management thought it was wise to have us ready to handle the patients. With this information, we can respond to emergencies and also join the other nurses globally to fight the pandemic.
Was the change communicated ahead of time or was the expectation that the change would be implemented immediately after it was proposed?
Then change was communicated two days prior to the training. Most people missed the first few days because they were on leave and catching up was not easy. most people were not ready for this training while others were overconfident in their information about this issue.
What could the manager or leadership team have done differently to make the change easier on the staff?
The management would have communicated a week or earlier, and endure that everyone was present for the training. They could also make the training mandatory, ensuring that they award certificates to all the participants. The management would also divide the sessions into two in order to accommodate those who were off and those who were on leave. This would reduce resistance and make it easier for both the nurses and management.

I understand the change that you went through in your place of work. two months ago, when were the number of COVID-19 cases started increasing drastically, the management proposed that we should work remotely to keep ourselves safe. This was however not implemented since the hospital is busy and more help is needed now than before. the training was then taken as the next option. I think this is a positive change because both the nurses and then patients will be protected due to reduced contact. This will also reduce the cost of the hospital. Also, the hospital will be forced to be innovative and utilize technology maximumly. For better results, I think the manager could have involved the staff in making this decision. He could have asked for their opinions and alternatives and made a decision to form their responses.

Just like many other healthcare facilities, changing clinic visits to virtual visits was one of the first changes made. This was an obvious option since it would reduce human contact hence reducing the spread. I think this is a positive change because both the nurses and then patients will be protected due to reduced contact. This will also reduce the cost of the hospital. Also, the hospital will be forced to be innovative and utilize technology maximumly hence being more efficient and effective. for better results, the management could have communicated this before and allowed the employees to give their feedback. They would also have trained the employees and the patients on how to use the systems, hence allowing a smooth run of processes.
