Creative Writing Assignment

Complete all parts of the assignment in one Word document. Be sure to clearly label each answer. Note that page count is not critical; what is important is adhering to the specific instructions in each section of the journaling project. Part I: Journal Entry. Choose a time when you can spend at least 45 minutes around a number of other people–at a shopping mall or park bench, for example. Carefully observe three of the individuals you encounter. Make a list of words that identify each person–that is, a series of nouns. Then, create a list of words expressing the acts or movement of each individual, using verbs. Also create a word list, making use of adverbs, that captures how each person acts. Finally, select adjectives for each individual that describe that person′s appearance. Based upon your observations in the first journal entry above, use the nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs you selected, in various combinations, to create five short, complete sentences to describe eachof the three individuals you observed (a total of 15 sentences). You may use other words not appearing in your lists to smoothly complete your sentences. Choose a scene–outside your bedroom window, next to your school, at your favorite vacation spot, for example. Using your senses, try to determine what mood or feeling this view conveys; there may be several. Is it a bleak winter day with a somber feeling? If it′s a sunny day in May, what is there about the scene that contributes a spirit of warmth, happiness, or renewal? What do the trees, hills, grass, and rooftops “say” to you? List those desсrіptive elements of the scene that add to the prevailing mood. Choose those that you feel best describe the scene and impart the dominant mood or feeling. Part II. Based upon your observations in the Journal Entry section for this lesson, reveal each of the three individuals you observed. In one substantial, 125-word paragraph for each, using specific details in complete sentences, answer each of the questions listed below. (If you have trouble, write short, flat sentences to record your main ideas; then substitute or fill in specific details.) a) How does this person look? b) What is this person doing? c) How is this person doing what he/she is doing? (Hint: For this first part of the assignment, you might find it helpful to use some pre-writing activity to get yourself started. Refer to the introduction for some ideas. You might try making a list of characteristics or doing a “doodle” for example.) Choose a feeling that could be suggested by physical surroundings, such as sadness, optimism, depression, joy, confusion, harmony, or anger. The physical setting could be a room (real or fictitious) or perhaps an outdoor scene–a patio, seashore, or wooded path. In approximately 250 well-chosen words, describe the setting you have chosen in such a way that the feeling it conveys is clearly portrayed in your writing. Think about using each of your five senses as you first observe and then record your impressions, relying on specific details. First compose a simple ten-sentence account of an event in someone′s life–perhaps a walk in the woods, an hour in Math class, or daydreaming out of a window. Write a first version that intentionally uses language that is flat, general, non-vivid, and lacking in flavor. (Remember “Her pretty friend moved quietly.”) Then write a second version of the same account, substituting words and phrases that are fresh, lively, and dynamic. Try to make your second ten-sentence version come alive through the vitality and color of your expression.
