Respond to Student 1 (Breanna)

the term Deviant behavior is so broad and anything under the sun, whether illegal or immoral can be considered a deviant behavior. Consuming alcohol can be considered a deviant behavior if it is consumed in large amounts and at one time. Having a drink or two after work in the comfort of your own home is not a crime and you are unable to harm anyone because you are at home. Consuming one drink after another in public, then getting drunk can be considered a deviant behavior. How many news stories have we read/ heard where someone was drunk and got behind the wheel and got into a horrible accident and killed themselves and/ or harmed other innocent people. Also, excessive alcohol consumption leads to crimes being committed such as rape, robbery, sexual assaults and other forms of violence. Many people have done illegal things and things they would have never done if they were not drunk. Having one or two glasses of wine or one beer in the comfort of one’s home is not a deviant act but having so may drinks that you black out and get into illegal activity or harm someone because you are intoxicated is deviant behavior. Drinking alcohol is legal and socially acceptable, so can it really be a deviant behavior?

Respond to student 2 also (Saria)

Personally I do not believe that consuming alcohol is an act of deviance. Some people might disagree and it may be for the reason that they themselves do not consume and find it to be wrong for other reasons but for it to be labeled deviant to me would be very extreme. Of course there are unfortunate instances where the excessive drinking may lead to an accident or in general driving under the influence then of course I would consider that to be deviant since it is illegal.  There is nothing wrong with the drink itself, it is just the hidden fact behind it and how it affects your body and mind. This reminds me a bit from the module and when it talked about labeling deviance and the consequences it can bring to the labeled and laberler. What you do after drinking is what can make it deviant or not. There are many people who just casually drink after work, with friends or whenever and it ends there but then there are people who can become dangerous after drinking and can commit a crime.
