The media of the Film clearly shown the totalitarianism was transferred in 1985, which acted as a reminder which was passed in the year 1984, Orwell had a vision that was coming true. Later in 1984, the movie called Brazil was realized, which resembled 1984, and it was marked by every reader who came across the Film.
The Film is filled with humour, iron twists, and this makes it defer from the Orwell’s vision slightly. When a person watches the Film Brazil and knows about 1984, then they realize there is a lot of similarities since they both enlights the people on how to view their culture from a totalitarianism perspective as well as the oppression the citizens underwent under the law as well as what should be done to change the situation (Evans, 2019).
When one watches the Film or reads the article, then they can familiarize with 1984 even though they may not have watched the Film Brazil, the Film that discusses bureaucracy as well as post-industrial capitalism. Sam Lowry is the main actor in the movie, seems to be the centre of oppression and administration, which was under operation, and it was rampant. Still, at the same time, it was useless, consumerism as well as technological in terms of progress. The main character in the Film increases the intensity as well as frequency to dream until he comes across a Jill Layton who happened to be a truck driver and he looked like the one he saw in his dream. This is the time he realizes the fault in the system, the injustices, and inequities together with the red tape. He later meets a terrorist by the name Tuttle, he then does the freelancing work repair and realizes that bureaucracy prosecuted people and killed the innocent citizens by bureaucratic mix-ups as well as excessive paranoia.
Gilliam’s Film happens to show clearly the dream’s roles. Out of the concern Sam has for his people because of the oppressions they were undergoing, so he continued to dream of strange, beautiful lands and in this land he fought bureaucracy together with technology that was used to oppress the innocent citizens. At last, he can achieve his dreams after falling in love with Jill and at last Jill is killed and he is arrested, he is tortured. He is saved by Tuttle together with other terrorists and helped him to escape from the building where torture took place. Sam had dreamt that Jill was killed and he was able to escape, and this came to pass. The movie ends with Sam smiling alone in the chamber where he was being tortured.
Parallelism
There is a parallel between the Film and what happened in 1984; both events took place in London. Both events used the same technology since it was already advanced, but according to our standard, the technology seems crude. The technology in both uses pneumatic tubes for paperwork transfer. Both of them used TV with small screens and the typewriters used was old-fashioned. In 1984 ministries of love, plenty and truth we there and in Brazil, there was ministries of information (MOI) together with convenient service. In both, there was a sign of people oppression which was carried out by respective bureaucracies (Gale, 2018).In 1984 there were posters about big brother as well as the slogan and the advertisements are seen in the Brazil film. The members of the community in both lived drab lives, in 1984 they used a machine-generated novel, and for Brazil they used television. The people economy became disparity once the social hierarchy of a person changed, and this could be noticed in both worlds.
There is character parallelism since from the Film we have Jill, and for 1984 we have Julia, and this acts as a coincidence, and both women acted to be the centre of interest for the main character. Both of them were for the men’s rebellion. They were made to be “unpersons ”, the party and Jill made Julia by the computer film. Winston sees O’Brien as a friend, but when he is captured he brainwashes him, and this happens in 1984, and the same happens to Sam when he is dreaming and every dream he had had a particular role in the Film. The main characters are both members of the parties that was after fighting the oppression of the innocent citizens. Winston was in ministry and Sam was in MOI.
Value-analysis
The central values of 1984 were freedom, truth and individuality; these values were after making a relation as well as a significant impact on the whole system. One could easily predict the fact from the events that presented themselves. The telescreen lied to the public and exaggerated everything, and the criminals were convicted of giving liars. Even the main character, who is Winston manufactures lies at his job place, and he substituted the dead police with the hero’s party who at last became unpersons. At last, the truth reviews itself “Oceania is at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia ” (Meirelles, 2019). The party is mentioned, and immediately it is accepted by the party members. One can get a deeper understanding of the truth from the relationship between the fact and 1984. Winston states “Everything fades into mist, the past is erased. The lies become truth and then becomes a lie again”. The party is after manipulating people’s past.
Winston writes “he who controls the past controls the future and who controls the present controls the past ”. On the other hand, Hayden says “Every historical narrative has a latent or manifest purpose the desire to moralize the events which it treats ” (Shenk, 2018). From the movie, values can be derived from the dialogue, the actions of the characters, the characters themselves, visual images, music and the film settings. The medium in the movie and the article are comparable since they share the same medium. From the Film there is a pronouncing truth as compared to the Orwell’s novel even if some alterations, as well as omissions, are done.
In conclusion, there is a lot of similarities between 1984 and the Film by the name Brazil, the women from both of them encourage men’s rebellion, and they have almost the same names. The main characters in both are members of the parts which are after helping people to get out of oppression, and they have a mission which is accomplished at the end of each event.
