Electoral College vs The Proposed Electoral System

An electoral college can be defined as a body of people that represent the U.S. by formally casting votes for the president and the vice-president. The electrical college is what is stipulated in the U.S. constitution that the electors will vote for the office of the president and the vice president. In this century, there has been this two occasion whereby the candidate that has the most popular votes across the United States end up having fewer votes in the Electoral College end loses the elections. Therefore some scholar and activist are arguing that a democratic system should be exercised. The aspirant who wins the most popular votes is the one who should be declared as the winner hence they are proposing a bylaw to do away with the electoral college without necessarily amending the constitution which is an impossible move to make (National Popular Vote). Therefore this essay will explore the National Popular Vote movement and compare the way Electoral College as the current way in which the president is being elected currently and compare it with the new systems that the activists are advocating for and hence explain which method is superior and why.

Electoral College vs The Proposed Electoral System

The National Popular Vote (NPV) bill guarantees the presidency typically to the candidate that receives the most popular votes across the 50 states and the district of Colombia. This system has been enacted in law with 196 electoral votes and 16 jurisdictions. This is a compact by the NPV that ensures that each vote in every state matters in the presidential election because the compact is a state-based approach that preserves the Electoral College, the power of the states to control each presidential election and the state control of the elections. NPV is gives an analysis of the electoral college based on factual figures that since the year 1789 and 2016, there have been five elections in which all the candidates that had the most popular votes nationwide did not win the elections for the presidential seat and rate of such occurrence appears to be one in twelve’s cases. NPV states that the electrical college has shortcoming compared to the proposed system because the current system is based on the factual situation of winner takes all, and it has been enacted by legislatures in 48 states and the law awards all the states electoral votes to the candidate that received the most popular votes in each state. An because of these states, the winner takes all the statutes. Therefore the presidential candidates have no concrete reason to pay attention to the issues of concern to the voter states where the statewide outcomes is normally a foregone conclusion (National Popular Vote).

As compared to the proposed system whereby all the voters elect the president in all the states and the election is conducted in accordance with the constitution. Therefore this system gives he presidential candidates a whole number proportional approach that the presidential candidates can campaign in all the 50 states and compare to the Electoral College where the candidates would only campaign in about half of the rules (National Popular Vote). On the other hand, wine in this proposed system is based on the whole-number approach is bound to necessarily give victory to the candidates that have garnered the most popular votes nationwide which is an aspect that is different compared to the electoral college since it does not work under this rules. Therefore the pending case in the Supreme Court for the proposed method by the NPV outlines that because of the compact state laws that do not rely upon to purport the requirement of the presidential elections. The system does not the presidential electors to vote in a certain way. Hence, therefore the NPV organization does not see the electoral college as a system that can be relied upon to give political parties to vet and select the presidential candidates despite the system having worked reliably over the years by not purporting or telling their presidential electors how to vote.

Which System Is Superior And Why

The Electoral College is more superior to the proposed method. Firstly this system is superior because it is generally portrayed as a battle to win states and their adjacent electoral votes. An example is that in the 2016 election Hillary won in Vermont and so she went ahead and got three electoral votes and when Donald Trump won Alaska he got three electoral votes. And whoever gets to 270 electoral votes first which are a majority of the 538 total wins the entire elections (National Popular Vote). So this shows that this system is so superior that by simply trying to win the most votes in the whole country does not count as compared to establishing a presidential campaign that will steer you to put together a map state victory that will amass more than 270 electoral votes which is a simplified version that gets one to win the elections. This shows us that when Trump won the state of Alaska, the most practical scenario is that the Republican Party’s nominated an elector slate and the same [process repeated itself across the whole country in the U.S.

Secondly, the Electoral College system is more superior because the winner takes all the statutes which adversely affects the governance because. The battleground state only receives 7% more of the federal grants as compared to the spectator states and hence because of the winner takes all statutes president will go into the office without having won the most popular votes nationwide. This is an aspect that shows how this system is powerful and superior. Do you imagine being sworn in as the new [president without having won the most votes in the whole nation when there is another candidate who had worn the most votes which means that is the candidates whom most of the voters in the entire nation wanted to be elected as president, but by merely winning the votes in most of the states you end up being the president (National Popular Vote)? That shows how superior this system is as compared to the other proposed system by NPV.

In conclusion, figures show that because of the winner takes-all-statutes, five of the 45 presidents that have run the office in the U.S. have done so without necessarily winning the most popular votes nationwide and the current president Donald Trump is quite a good example. But also this system has purported near misses which have been common under the current state-by-state winner take all method because of the technique used in awarding the electoral votes. Therefore we can conclude by saying that the current method gives the voter a direct voice in electing only the small number of the presidential electors under which the voter’s state is entitled
