    • Background

There are many professional careers that higher learning institutions students can exploit and venture into, which vary from law, medicine, business, and many others. The chosen career fields depend on the student’s interests and skills. Skills are particularly crucial in a career for they help to progress and grow an individual in that field. The set of skills helps to earn student employment easily and helps them to stand out over other employees in their preferred career choices (Milam W. Alken, 2010). Therefore, higher learning institutions need to focus on promoting such skills that will easily garner employment. They should focus on each student and their preferred career of choice and teach core skills that employers look for when hiring. The steps will ensure that once they venture into the job market, it will be easy for them to be employed. Therefore, this report focuses on four crucial skills that are important in progressing a student’s career. It has focused on the business field; thus, the four sets of skills are particularly important in the business career. The report is prepared for QUTIC director, Ken Beutel and aims to discuss four core skills for business students to improve their employability. It is also supposed to give the client recommendations on how these skills can get imparted to students. The report is due on 18/5/2020.

  • Purpose

The report aims to fulfill two significant purposes. First, is to investigate the essential skills necessary for business students to access employment easily. Second, to recommend how these skills can get taught to QUT students.

  • Discussions
    • Communication Skills

The role communication plays in business activities cannot be undermined. It is through the business that management is actualized, ideas get generated, and deals are made. It is, therefore very important for anyone with interest in a business career to develop good communication skills in order to improve their employability chances (Fisher, 2019). Furthermore, once they get employed, it becomes easier to communicate with their employers and other workers. The skill can get harnessed in students by encouraging group discussions and promoting class presentations. Through these measures, students will be able to discuss issues with other students freely. Additionally, class presentations help in developing their courage and confidence to speak in front of people.

  • Creativity Skills.

Another important skill for students, especially those venturing in the business field, is creativity. Like communication skills, creativity helps students to improve their employability chances. Employers are always looking for new ideas that will bring in profits. Such approaches help in creating unique brands that increase business sales consequently, profits. The ideas also help a business remain competitive and grow their market shares (Review, 2011). Therefore, employers are always looking for creative employees who can offer new ideas to the business. Having a creative mind for a student is thus very important if they are to get employed without much struggle. Specific measures can be applied by higher learning institutions to improve their students’ creativity skills. Such means may include running a business idea generation program. Through such a program, students can engage in activities that help them generate ideas, thus improving their skills. Moreover, they can be assigned research work to the students. The skills will, therefore, help them learn new things, which will increase their creativity skills.

  • Interpersonal Skills.

Interpersonal skills involve the easiness of a person to relate with others. The business profession incorporates a lot of different personalities from different people. A student needs to know how to peacefully interact and work with the different personalities exhibited by various co-workers. The skill helps an employee to maintain a good working relationship with others (Bryman, 1993). Therefore, employers look out for individuals with such a capability to employ since a conducive working environment helps in business growth. Institutions should aim to impart or promote such skills in their students, especially those following a business career. Some of the ways higher learning institutions can optimize on to give this skill may include assigning group assignments and attending academic functions. Group assignments help a student to interact with different personalities in the group and listen to different ideas. The skill helps in promoting interpersonal skills in the student. Furthermore, academic forums provide an excellent learning ground for students to grow interpersonal skills by interacting with different students from different places.

  • Leadership Skills

One of the most essential skills that a business graduate can have is a leadership skill. Good leadership keeps many businesses afloat and successful, and they must exhibit these skills in business management (Review H. B., 2011). A good leader has all other skills that will help in the growth of a business enterprise. Skills such as communication, interpersonal, and creativity contribute to making a good leader. Therefore a graduate who exhibits this skill to an employer has a great chance of getting employed. Employers want to hire people who can lead others, solve problems easily, and give guidelines to others (Review H. B., 2011). Leadership skills make an overall leader, and employers are always looking for such graduates. Therefore, higher learning institutions should invest in teaching their students this skill that will help students to improve their employability chances in the job market. They can do this by giving the students chances to lead. Institutions can create leadership position such as campus presidents, different department leaders and group leaders. The positions will help students to discover and grow their leadership skills.

  • Conclusion

The above skills are some of the core requirements that many business employees look for in a graduate when they want to hire. The methods of imparting these skills are further discussed in the conclusion.

  • Class presentation to improve communication skills

Through class presentation, a student can gain courage and confidence in themselves, especially in speaking to people. This method is significant in helping students develop their communication skills.

  • Research work to help develop creativity

Research helps higher institutional students to grow their creativity. Students get to learn of different ways to approach a problem by assigning activities that involve a lot of research. Creativity is very important in the business field, and research helps develop this skill.

  • Group discussions about growing interpersonal skills

The business profession incorporates a lot of diversity in terms of personality, ideas, and approach to various things. Through group discussions, students are given a chance to experience this diversity that will help them in their employment places with different co-workers.

  • Assigning authority to develop leadership

Imparting leadership skills is very important to students venturing into the business field of profession. This skill can be developed in higher learning institutions by having different student leadership posts in the institutions. These posts offer a great platform for students to develop leadership skills.

  • Recommendations

This report has the following recommendations can be adopted by QUT to teach the following skills to students. Each method for each skill is suggested below.

  • Having presentation.

Class presentations are one of the methods that can be adopted to teach communication skills to students. QUT can implement this method by ensuring that a big percentage of school assignments especially done in groups, are submitted as class presentations. This will help the school to impart the skill to different students at the same time.

  • Research work.

Research is one of the methods that can be adopted to enhance creativity in the students. The school can achieve this by allocating a lot of research to students. It can also ensure the availability of research materials like books to facilitate research. The research will help students to develop their creativity, which is an important skill in improving their employability chances.

  • Group discussions

Interpersonal skills are important is workplaces, and therefore employers look for graduates with such expertise. Thus institutions have to develop this skill in their students. To accomplish this, QUT can ensure classes are given a lot of group discussions. It can ensure that every student in the school is atleast in one group. The talks will help the students in relating to others.

  • Assigning leadership positions

Leadership generally incorporates all other skill that an employee can possess. Therefore, institutions need to develop this skill in their students to help them improve their employability chances. QUT can achieve this by establishing posts in the institutions. It can also encourage as many students to vie for the different posts available. This will help the students to develop the skill that will eventually help them gain employment.
