ESSAY
Introduction
Luiz Valdez has written the play “Na Saco Nada De La Escuela.” It is considered to be a lengthy play as it discusses in depth the significance of information and knowledge towards Mexican-American History. The play is more focused on the Mexican-American discrimination side in America, which might cause them to be ashamed of their heritage if they take things seriously. Three Chicanos in the play have to face discrimination from their teachers as well as peers. Esperanza, Moctezuma, and Fransico had to face much stress in the school as they were being discriminated against, and they developed a thought that they are not good enough for society. They will not accept them. Their lives have become extremely hard and unbearable as they had to face discrimination daily in school as they were Chicanos. Francisco is proud to be who he is, and he speaks Spanish throughout the play and also gets to know about how to become a graduate and help his people. Moctezuma tries his best to assimilate as he considers it the only way to become successful, and he ends up forgetting all his people to be successful. Esperanza is ashamed of who she is, but Francisco convinces him to stay with her people and educate the people to let them know about more opportunities. People need to know more about the discrimination so that they can treat others better.
Discrimination is needed to be eradicated from the class to make it a better learning place. Abraham is one of the students dressed in a baseball cap and cowboy boots. He is crying, and the teacher wants him to sit. The teacher points towards Monty and asks him to sit with him, but he refuses to sit with him by saying he is brown. The teacher then points towards Monty and asks Abraham to sit with him. Abraham refuses to sit with him as well and says he is black. The teacher then asks him to sit with a white girl, and Abraham gladly sits with her. These are some basic roots of discrimination that are not taken seriously, and even the teachers do not play their role to make them feel equal. The students should be made that they would be judged only based on character and how much a student is good at studies. They have nothing to do with caste, creed, or color. The classroom is a place to learn and to cooperate, which is only possible when the children learn to accept each other, and they refuse to see others as inferiors or superiors. The least the teacher could do is make Abraham realize that what he is asking for is wrong. There is nothing bad about sitting with Monty even if he is brown. The character has nothing to do with color or creed. It is possible that Monty might prove to be a good friend in his regards and might prove to be better as compared to others. The teacher should not have listened to Abraham, and he should have made him sit with Monty regardless of his color.
Children should be taught to love each other and not to discriminate. The teacher calls Abraham on the stage and asks him to play his role in ABC. He starts with A for apple and B is for Brown and Black. C is for the kill, and Abraham points towards Black and Brown students. The teacher scolds him and asks him not to say such a thing again. Abraham spits at their faces. Both of them try to stand and leave the class, but they are interrupted by the teacher, and they had to sit in their places. Abraham spits on their faces, and he goes away. The response of the teacher was not appropriate as compared to the action which he did.
However, sooner that time, he kicked Monty just for crying out loud, which can be considered normal for the baby. However, she did not seem to be much furious as compared to how she was supposed to react. Her action should have been much harsher as compared to what she did. She did not even scold Abraham properly, and he let him walk away with it. The teacher should have been able to act in a different manner, which might have been able to teach him manner, and he will not dare to do such a thing again. What Abraham did was not expected by a child of that age. It is possible that the discrimination would grow bigger as he grows older, and he would discriminate to a greater extent. She could have made him stand out of the class so he could learn his lesson, and he will not dare to do the same thing again. Such an act can not be taken lightly, and the students should be taught properly in their early stages. Such people cause huge issues in the future, which are not taught about discrimination from the beginning. They should be given better attention.
International students should be allowed to carry on with their cultures and not be forced to accept something new if they do not want to. The teacher wanted a kid named to be called Franky instead of Francisco. The kid continued to stay that he does not accept to be called Franky, But the teacher kept on forcing him. Later on, the teacher gave up and went away. She said to himself that these culturally deprived students should not be allowed to spend their time with the normal kids. The students have the right to decide what they want others to call them and what they do not want to. Teachers can not decide on their behalf. They already have an allotted name, and most of the students like to be called by their original names. The name Francisco is a Mexican name, but the teacher wanted to give it American touch. The teacher called them abnormal just because the student wanted to be called by his original name. The cultural orientation can not decide either if the student is culturally deprived or not. The teacher should respect their cultural orientation, and all the students should be treated equally regardless of orientation. The school authorities need to make sure of the nature of the teacher. The children would be able to learn when the teacher is not well mannered, and he can not respect the cultural orientation of a child. The teacher should teach the students to feel pride in their culture, and they need to be who they are. They should make society accept them as they are, and they should not have their fundamentals just because someone does not like it.
Conclusion
Discrimination is considered to be one of the major issues which need immediate attention to be taken care of. Discrimination should be discouraged, and people should be taught to accept others as they are. The character should be the basics to judge others rather than their creed or color. This play was written to let people know about the American-Mexican discrimination so that they might have an idea about what type of hardships people had to go through in their early times. Even the children in the schools were not being treated well. The higher authorities did nit take well-planned steps, and the Mexicans had to suffer a lot. They were also not being given equal opportunities. The reader wants the audience to comprehend the significance of these historical events so that the History might not be able to repeat itself, and the American Mexicans would be able to be treated with respect and dignity. Also, the children should be taught about discrimination, and they need to know that they should judge others by their character.
