Factors Influencing Identity
As people grow, they face a lot of challenges that mold them into the people they become in the future. People’s childhood determines the kind of adults they eventually become and their response toward life. The environment a person grows in also influences who they become in the future and plays a role in determining their life outcomes. According to (Meloy 2002), individual’s friendships, peer-pressure, and the people they indulge in school help shape their future. Decisions made in life significantly impact the outcome of our lives, from success in education to relationships with the people who surround them.
The journey of individual’s lives starts right after their birth. When growing, people learn so many different things, good and bad. It is upon them to decide on whether to follow the virtues or the vices in life. Each decision made in life, good or bad, has consequences. Choices people make under pressure from their fellow peers tend to cause most problems in their lives. Everyone should associate themself with functional groups of peers that motivate them to be the best. Groups of friends that bring the best out of them and not the type that leads them to make wrong life decisions are the type of groups that they ought to be involved with.
According to the short story “Ranch Girl,” the narrator is accused of plagiarism. The false claim towards her causes her to drop the matter, and it shows that the pressure that gets from the surrounding influences people’s choices. Some choices made in life are due to pressure from parents, teachers, and even friends; some of these choices are dumb and mostly impact individuals negatively, but as people grow, they don’t consider the negativity; instead, they focus on that which matters. People are supposed to think before making decisions that would lead to some changes in their lives. There are so many ways to handle the ire that will see to it that positive outcomes are achieved. Lastly, people should focus on their goals. After a fall, individuals ought to rise and continue pressing harder for the choices made now affect the future.
The narrator and other girls often met somewhere they named the hill. While at that place, they watched rodeo boys engage in fights and races, as soon as the narrator hits sixteen years of age, she begins to go out at night, put curls on her hair, as well as to apply blue eye shadows (Meloy, 2002). This shows that the activities we engage in while growing affect us. The people we engage with during these activities also play a massive role in shaping us; for instance, the narrator turns sixteen and indulges in night outs. The exercises she engages in started way back when they were meeting at the hill. The same applies to us; our activities when we are younger effects and mold our future, the things we do when we are young define us and make us the adults we finally get to be. Individuals need to associate with lively activities that shape their future and help them grow into morally upright people. When we are indulging with friends during day to day activities, people should learn to separate the good from the bad and only apply the good.
When growing, individuals tend to feel that they are underachievers because of the competition they face from their fellow friends. Some friends end up successful, whereas others strive to reach what they term as a success. People should keep in mind that everyone’s fate is different. Patience should be practiced, and people ought not to question other people’s past decisions because whatever decision they made in the past can’t be changed. According to (Meloy 2002), Carla performs excellently in her biology and has plans of pursuing veterinary. She later drops out and gets married but later on opts out of marriage. Carla says that she is lucky because she has acquired a degree and does not have a child. Carla is regrets getting married and envies the narrator’s life. We are not supposed to let our past define us; the past can’t be changed, so we should focus on the future and what we can achieve.
Life is a journey that depends on the decisions people make. As individuals grow, they face challenges, downfalls, and success that mold them into the adults they become in the future. People should appreciate their past and work towards perfecting their future. Everyone should be keen when making decisions and consider the repercussions. According to the short story “Ranch girl, the characters’ lives are determined by the decision they make; similarly, the factors that influence people’s choices also affect their future lives.
