Abstract

The research focuses on friendship behaviors and how do they apply in life. Friendship is vital for existence since no man is an island. We all depend on one another for existence, and in life, everyone, at one time, needs a helping hand when they are low on esteem or have life difficulties. We also need people to celebrate when conditions are right for it. The research was carried out through watching ten videos out of seventy-seven in the movie, Friends. Two friends, Monica and Ross, were chosen to follow up on the qualities of good friendship. It was found out that they both showed qualities including; Honesty, acceptance, low maintenance, non-judgmental, loyal, respectful, and trustworthy. The research concluded that these qualities make up a good friendship, one that can last long and one that is true. Any qualities that are against these behaviors are signs of bad friendship.

Friendship Behaviors

Social connection has a very significant impact on the quality of individual life. There is a great association between friendship and success, and friendship requires great values to remain as it is. Research has shown that friendship has a lot of values, including acceptance and honesty, among other factors. Friendship behavior requires great sacrifices among the two who claim to be friends. It also requires a lot of forgivingness with the belief that the one who you term as a friend could not do wrong by you. It is essential to learn about friendship behavior because it lets one understand other people, judge them wisely, and also be a good friend to others. Lack of understanding of friendship behaviors can lead to having fake friends or becoming a lousy friend yourself.

What then are the friendship behaviors, and how do they apply life? This paper is a research on friendship behaviors as shown in the film, TV show Friends.

Method

In the movie, Friends, Ross, and Monica show examples of friendship behaviors in a number of ways. The show surrounds various friends, including Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, and Rachael, who also support the friendship behaviors between Ross and Monica (Bright, Kaufman, & Crane, 1994-1995). From the 77videos provided for the season, the relationship between Ross and Monica was consistently observed, and the behaviors elaborated in the research paper ruled out.

A total of 77 videos were selected, and every first video for every ten was selected. It was watched and analyzed accordingly, with friendship traits between Monica and Rose being recorded per every video. The videos were viewed during the research, with each video that was collected being analyzed through watching and taking short notes. Other research articles were used to supplement the findings, and a laptop was required to watch the clips and compile them.

Results

What are friendship behaviors, and how do we apply them in real life? According to the carried-out statistics and analysis, friendship was found to be undeniably important. It was found to be quite handy when it comes to solving any type of life challenge. It also provides mental and emotional nourishment, and it helps in finding companions who are willing to support you and appreciate you. Friendship has been analyzed, and it requires a couple of qualities to make sure that it does not fall into unhealthy dynamics and make sure you attain the rich, loving kind of friendship.

In the movie, Friends, Monica, and Ross repeatedly show signs of honesty (Bright, Kaufman, & Crane, 1994-1995). They are always open to each other on their life situations, and they tell each other the truth regardless of how tough a condition is for one of them. They never show cruelty over one another, and they avoid manipulativeness and deceitfulness kind of behavior. They also display high levels of acceptance to each other. There are instances where flaws about them are shown, but they still accept one another. Their decision-making techniques are also very different, but it does not affect their friendship.

Great friendship requires low maintenance. Monica and Ross are mostly together in the videos, but they are mostly coming from different places to reconnect and share. They do not ask for attention, and therefore no commitment needed. Friendship is based on non-judgmental behavior. In most cases, Monica and Ross make one another confident and are generally good to one another.

They are also very loyal to one another. They stick to each other’s side in the whole show and constantly help one another when in need. The two friends are very respectful to one another, and respect is effortlessly mutual. They also show trustworthy behavior and constantly count on one another.

Discussion

The research showed that friendship has to accompany different qualities for its perfection. Among the characteristics of the closest friends, genuineness is effectively one of the most significant. Your companions ought to carefully come clean with you, instead of deceiving keep you glad in the short term (Prakaso, 2018). They ought to never be unfeeling or damaging. Then again, trickery and manipulativeness are obvious characteristics of an awful friend.  On the off chance that you discover that a companion is misleading others, the odds are genuinely high that they are dishonest with you too.

Friends are tolerating, in any event, when their lives separate from your own. They will comprehend that your decisions are your own, and see that what’s directly for them isn’t directly for you. Their statements regularly bring up how significant it is for friends to have the chance to reconnect after a time separated. As such, your companion shouldn’t require your consideration each moment of the day, and ought to have the option to comprehend that you have lots of responsibilities.

Good friends are non-judgmental. Friends who make you feel confident and support all your ideas are good, and they will always be reliable. They put themselves in your shoes and understand every situation from your point of view (Freitag & Bauer, 2016). Fake friends always try to make you believe there is a different way in which the issue should have been handled. The friends are loyal. They are always on your lookout, and their commitment to you is not fickle. They cannot watch you struggle in terms of money or health, and they are always there.

Finally, friends are respectful and trustworthy. They should be able to keep secrets and value your time. They should have ideas of how you would act and not depend on other people for information about you without inquiring from you first.

The research was able to come up with seven different friendship behaviors. However, the behaviors are from a movie that is scripted rather than a real-life record of activities. It could be better to analyze a real-life friendship with real-life situations. Using interviews and questionnaires to question a couple of friends could bring a more realistic answer. The study was a success, but it dealt with information that surrounded by fantasy and made-up situations. I could also research the ways to know the bad or fake friends as subsequent research for this research.

Conclusion

The research was meant to find out the qualities of a good friend or friendship behaviors. It was concluded that there are seven friendship behaviors. Friends are honest, and they open up to one another on everything. Dishonesty is a sign of bad friendship, and a friendship that supports deceitfulness does not last. Friendship is also based on acceptance. True friends accept one another for who they are and are not judgmental of the choices that the other person makes. True friendship is not expensive to maintain since it does not entail too much commitment. True friendship is non-judgmental, and the involved parties often put themselves in your shoes in case of wrong decisions. They are very loyal, respectful, and can be trusted to keep secrets and not talk behind your back. The research was a success since I now understand what I should look for in a good friendship.
