Article topic: How A Mechanical Seal Prevents Pump Leakage

Keywords: Mechanical shaft seals for pumps, Trisun Mechanical Seals, Mechanical seal suppliers

Leakage may occur in pumps for various reasons. But, this issue has to be addressed soon to prevent the leak from happening further. The leakage can cause not only corrosion of the casing material but also the bearing. If corrosion is not handled, the damage is likely to occur to the pump. Besides, a short circuit in the motor is likely to arise from the leakage.

Naturally, these issues are most likely to impede the functioning of the pump. Eventually, the pump may stop working. Most firms thus spend huge money to fix the problem of liquid leakage. But today, there are new devices that have been improvised to help in leakage prevention. There are numerous mechanical seal suppliers but you should find the right one to make sure that the products you are buying are authentic.

Mechanical shaft seals for pumps are sealing devices related to the contact type of seals with a pair of friction surfaces of two parts. One part is mounted on the shaft and is movable. The other stationery is located in the pump casing. The rubbing pair of the device operates in conditions of pressure drops with minimum consumption of lubricants. The lubricant in these devices is often a compacted medium.

How A Mechanical Seal Prevents Pump Leakage

A mechanical seal has seal heads that are positioned flat against each other in the seal chamber located between the motor and volute. An actuator like spring is used to press the heads close to each other.

The rotating motor is usually inserted in between the two ringed faces and then attached to the impeller. When the motor shaft rotates, the seal which is on the upper side rotates with the shaft, whereas the bottom seal remains stationary.

Therefore, this action helps in creating a sealing interface that aids in keeping the water in the volute and also hinders the leakage. A small amount might escape the seals, but it will act as a lubricant for the seal. Besides, it will evaporate.

In general, a mechanical shaft seal for the pump has two rings:

  • fixed ring
  • a movable ring located on the shaft

One of the rings can axially move due to the presence of an elastic pressing element (spring). This element, together with the push sleeve and the movable ring, form an axial-movable block or pinch assembly. They provide a contact of the end surfaces in the conjugation of the movable and fixed rings of the pair without the compressive force of the medium pressure.

The primary sealing seal is achieved using two very flat polished surfaces that create a complex path perpendicular to the leak path (prevent leakage). The rubbing contact between these two flat surfaces minimizes leakage. As with all seals, one surface is fixedly mounted in the housing, and the other is movable and rotates with the shaft. One of the surfaces is usually made of wear-resistant material, such as carbon graphite. The other is usually made of a relatively resistant solid material such as silicon carbide. Dissimilar materials are typically used to prevent these two surfaces from coming in contact.

Mandatory parts of the mechanical seals shaft for pump are seals between the rotor and the rotating block, between the housing and the stator block. The design includes elements for fixing the sealing rings (drive pins, set screws), which drive the movable ring and prevent rotation (angular displacement) of the fixed ring relative to the housing.

Mechanical seals operate under various conditions in terms of pressure and shaft speed; the degree of their load may be different. For generalized operating conditions of the seals, it is proposed to use the product of two parameters: the differential pressure on the seal and the sliding velocity in the friction pair.

If you need the best mechanical seals to prevent leakage of your pump, then opt for Trisun Mechanical Seals. The seals will serve you for a long time, and besides, they are pocket-friendly.
