This assignment requires you to write an essay responding to the general topic of “literature and community.” In this case, you will develop a proposal in response to the question, What is the best way “literature” can generate community in Tulsa (or Oklahoma more broadly)? Your goal is to propose an event, action, or policy you believe will facilitate community development.
To develop material for the essay, you can examine your own responses to some of these questions: What “literary” events do you believe should take place in Tulsa and why? How could literature be incorporated into community institutions or venues? What “literary” programming would contribute to community development? What policies do you believe should be enacted in order to make use of “literature” in the community? How can communities imagine “literature” as an asset or resource? What feelings and attitudes are necessary for communal strength and how can “literature” support them?
Your definitions of “literature” will vary as much as your perspectives on “community.” No matter how you approach these concepts, the essay will need to incorporate at least 3 sources. One or more of these need to be academic. Drawing from the research performed for the last assignment can be a valuable strategy for fulfilling this aspect of the assignment. The rest can be drawn from non-academic sources such as newspapers, blogs, flyers, message boards, and so on. You just need to make sure you justify their presence in your essay. Make sure your reader understands why you’re using them.
The essay needs to incorporate 3 aspects of proposal arguments. The first is to “identify the problem.” What weakness, gap, or deficiency does your proposal address? Why should readers agree that the issue you raise indicates a “problem”? The second is to propose your solution. The third is to justify the solution. How would your proposal “correct” the “problem”? How would your solution be implemented? Why should readers accept your solution over some other possibilities? What are the benefits of your proposal? The sources you use for the essay can contribute to any combination of these elements.
